  • Head Gasket leak, can I fix this?

I put this new thred up so people will know what my problem is sorry:)

I noticed my cooling system was acting up because of the dexcool crap so I took it to a shop to see if I could flush the system and change to the green stuff, and WE found alot more problems. My hoses are "crunchy" and hard radiator looks like crap and then I saw wetness and a small amount of coolant leaking from my heads...head gaskets are bad. I dont want to warp my heads or anything else and I just cant pay 2G's to fix this. I do all my own work and I believe I could replace my head gaskets but this would by far be the hardest thing I have ever done.

My question: Has anyone else changed thier own head gaskets, how difficult is it and is thier an internet guide around somewhere? Thank all

Heh, heh, heh, heh. That is what I am doing RIGHT now. I have a 3.4 L. But mine head gaskets took a jump also. To be honest with you, its not THAT hard. But it is a time consuming effort, and you do need a good amount of tools, like extensions, anglers. Etc. Just one thing... you cant be too organized. I mean label EVRYTHING, and put EVRY bolt in a labeled coffee can. Seriously this came back to bite me in the ***. And also, when you get to it, I will tell you how to set the rocker arms, it can be kind of a *****. Be sure to check EVERYTHING out. I got down to the heads off, and could see inside, that my stock cam had a rounded over cam lobe, then I saw that when I moved my timing chain ( I had my timing chain cover removed) that there was slack in the chain, so I had to replace both the cam and the timing chain. If you want to save about $1800 then do it yourself. I was in the same boat as you. I do all my own car repairs, but had never done a head gasket, at least not on a late model car. I did them on my freinds carbed 350 V8 in his chevelle. (Easy). Anyways, good luck man, hope you get it sorted out. ;)
