OK heres the deal ive had my 93 3.4litre for about 8 years now, and about 4 years ago i took off the cat and hallowed it out. everything was fine until one day my service engine soon light came on, so i was working at a dealership at the time and i had one of the guys there hook it up to a scanner tool and it was the egr valve, one of the solinodes, i dont remember which one. anyways i went to junkyard and got a new/used one and put it on. it was fine for about 3 months then the exact samething happened. Does ANYONE have any ideas what the deal is with this, it has been frustrating me for about 3 years now and im fed up with it. is there any way to take the egr off and not have my SES light come on (and i will not just take out the bulb).

there is no way to take it off and not get an SES light. its either block it off and pull the bulb or get a brand new one. lets see $300 or pull the bulb...not a hard decision for me.

Part number 17091147 $194 at GMpartsdirect.com

I guess you could pull the bulb, then again, why not fix it the right way, get better gas mileage, and have the comfort of a SES light giving you an early warning to something serious.

People who pull bulbs are half-assed idiots. Don't take the easy way out. Fix it right.

no ****, pulling the bulb is stupid. your letting a problem sneek up on you and bit your *** instead of getting it at the beginning

I have a 93 also...I just went and got a new one. I havent' had a problem with it since. I would also do your o2 sensors if they are getting old. Cuz they start getting gunked up after running rich for a long time. I got mine for not a lot at the local parts store, maybe $10?.

Also, are you still working at the dealership, or if you know someone who works for a GM dealership, ask them to order one and pay them for it. That discount is nice.

well i can still get it at the dealer cost, but it is still like 250. the only problem with paying 200 bucks for a new one is what if it happens again, then im out 200 and im back at the same point i was, i have already replaced it once with a used one. i have however, never replaced the o2 sensors, wonder if that is causing the egr to go bad quicker?

it doesnt hurt to block it off, if it is ur egr. i have talked to several gm techs, and they all told me that it doesnt hurt anything. hell all the egr does is recycle exhaust gasses and put them back in ur engine. who wants recycled exhaust gasses back in ur engine. the egr is just emissions bs. i didnt want to pay 250 buck for one either. now, if your state puts sniffers on ur car for inspections then u will want to get a new one cause the it wont pass inspection, unless u know someone

Well if you buy it new you shouldn't have the problems as you did with you're previous one, reason why is because you purchased it from a junkyard.
The EGR works strikingly similiar like the cat to to tell you the truth. After so many miles the cat ends up getting clogged after all the gases that your engine has let out, unfortunately since the EGR is part the exhaust it gets all them gases too and gets gunked up.
So for you to be purchasing a used EGR that came out from (say a car w/ 100,000 miles) it's gonna have some wear and tear from the previous motor and it ain't going to last you long, the same applys to buying a used cat (which i know noone would buy) from a junkyard it will have it's wear and tear and would REALLY, REALLY be useless if it had 100K miles after all them gunk and ashes right?
Oh yeah and thats when you're O2's start suffering like camaronat said.
I hope this helps you out man.

Damn, this info. should be posted up like sticky or something

wow thanks for the explanition. i might have too look into just buying a new one then. or maybe ill just make a little plate to block it off completely and figure out the phms of resistance it should be at and put in a lil resistot on the egr cables so no check engine light. and by the way, where i live currently does not have any omissions laws so i wont be getting checked any time soon. thanks for all the info guys.

I see no problem with running a blocked EGR.
