    Tranny
1.So I just unbolt the bottom and let it all
    drain out?
2.What does the filther look like, and where
can i buy a new one? or do I even have to
    change it?
3.Can I drain the tranny oil into my reg oil
    bucket and mix them?
4.Do i bolt the the pan back up and just open
the fill hole and put the new stuff in?
5.What do you guys recommend for new tranny
    fluid?
6.How much fluid do i need?

    Rear Differential
1.How much fluid do i need?
    2.What do ya'll recommend?
3.Uhm, how excatly do I do this? I know there
is either a drain plug or I just have to
take off the the back part or something
    along those lines.
4.I want to clean this area out, i think like
brake cleaner or something similar will
    do this.
5.Can i mix the fluid with the tranny fluid
and go back and turn it in?
6.Can I turn it in into like a Pepboys?
7.Do i need to do anything to my gears once
    I get the fluid out

did you catch what I said before it went bye bye?

I'll re answer some of them.

tranny: I highly recomend a flush instead of droping the pan. but if you desind to anyway

1 yes, just unbolt it leaveing 2 or 3 bolts in that will hold the pan some as it drains by slowly loosening them so teh pan tilts.

2 the filter looks like a flatish metal plate with filter materail inside it. It is attached to the tranny by a tube and unless it;s held in with anything will pull stright out. If you drop teh pan you migt as well change it. Any parts store will have it just ask for a tranny filter kit and it will come with the pan gasket as well

3 yes you can mix them and then take it to get it recycled or whatever you like

4 reinstall the pan and then add fluid with a funnal through the dipstick tube.

    5 dextron III

6 start with 3 quarts of tranny fluid. start teh car, rin it through all teh gears slowly with your foot on the brake. Then with teh car running and warm check the dipstick and see if you need to add more

    rear

1 buy 3 quarts (you will use just over 2)

2 a good brand of GL5 oil in a weight of around 85W90 or abouts.

    3. losen the rear cover to drain the old fluid out. just do it slowly like teh tranny to avoid a mess.

4 yes brake cleaner will clean everything well, just make sure that you dry it compleatly before you finsih.

    5 yes

6 yes (most of them anyway)

    7 no

    other
1 not really, I get them all snug and then go back and go over them again. DO NOT over tighten the ranny pan. it will warp it and leak.

    2 yes.

    3. thats about it.

here is a link that you might find helpfull. It;s not a 6er but teh same idea. http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/lubeoil.htm

flushing is done my a mechine. every drop of the about 10 quarts that is in teh tranny is replaced with the same amount of new fluid. droping the pan olny drains about 1/3 of whats still in the tranny. It's like drianing 2 quarts of oil out of your motor, changing the filter and calling it good enough. I highly recomend it. It ranges from about 50-100 bucks at a good shop but this way you get it ALL, it's fast and you don;t get soaked with fluid

Flushing is where you would remove all the tranny fluid from the tranny. Just dropping the pan doesn't remove all the tranny fluid. Tranny pan holds about 5 quarts.

Be careful tightening up the pan. It is very VERY easy to over tighten it and it will spilt the gasket or if its not tight enough it will leak. Torque the tranny pan bolts to 96 in/lbs.

I would suggest the cork style gasket and NOT using RTV sealant, just the gasket. When you buy the gasket it will usually come with a new filter too... replace that while youre there.

The only problem with flushing is you push any metal into places that will quicken wearing out your tranny. I would drop the pan first, and clean it. If you have ever removed a transmission pan, you will see what I mean, of course, there are microscopic particles that will be undetected, but they are there!

the flush works on the cars own pump. therefor anything thats getting moved around while flushing is teh same exact substance that is getting pushed around while normaly drivig teh car. the magnat on the pan captures most things

Another way to do it, that doesn't risk pushing particles where you don't want them, is to drop the pan twice within a short amount of time. Change the fluid and filter, drive the car for a month, and do it again. Then you change at least 60% or more of the fluid without power flushing bad things where you don't want them. Dropping the pan is messy, but easy. Done it a few times before and never had leaks or problems...used only the cork gasket.

Thats still not going to get it all. even if you change half of it each time your taking half of a half the second time. it's not like when you do half twice you get 100% of it. Not to mention that would be a lot of work and still gettting expensive since your going to be buying a lot of tranny fluid.

And trust me. flushin will NOT harm the car in the slightest. If I had an auto I would have done it 2 times by now.

normally when we flush a tranny we remove all fluids. Then pressurize the tranny and push a treatment fluid through it then tranny fluid. In other words... we have a pretty little machine that does it for us ;)

if you drop the pan twice in a short period... that'll pretty much give you new fluid.

I've never trusted one of those little flush machines, they just shove particles around. Besides, your fresh fluid will only be dirtied up by the old filter if it doesn't get changed.

Dropping the pan and replacing the filter is the best way to go ;)

The owner of the local transmisson shop expressly said to not flush a firebird transmission. Flushing is good for just about all trannys, but for some reason, f-body models are susceptable to being damaged by flushing. I took his advise and just changed the filter and fluid. 130,000, miles on this car, and my transmission works perfect. By, the way, he could have kept quiet and got $85.00 out of me. But he is a christain, and being honest is what it is all about.

Transmissions have atleast one check valve in them "lets the fluid only flow one way", when they flush them the push the fluid the opposit way, and under pressure MAY break or jam the valve. Then you end up tearing you tanny apart trying to fix it. or worse yet damaging you tranny. thats what happend to the guy living next to me atleast, with this dodge pick up.
