• New dyno results!

Some of you may remember that my car was used as the dyno mule for the Hypertech Power Programmer 3. The final results was 189.9 RWHP & 223.0 RWTQ. Dyno Sheet Available Here

Today, the West Tennessee F-Body Assocation had a dyno day at Hypertech! Since my last dyno at Hypertech, the only performance modifications I had done were the 3" Catco cat and a 3" S-pipe. The cat & s-pipe netted 7.8 RWHP and 4 ft/lbs of torque gain! Final results, 197.7 RWHP and 227.0 RWTQ! :D Who said you lose torque going 3" exhaust?

FYI: First run with Borla closed, second run with Borla wide open.
    Dyno Sheet Available Here!

I've also learned that I need to change my RPM setting on my shift light.... and I need a cam to put power up to 6000!! ;)

Also, Hypertech will be coming out with some new products within the next year that will be dedicated to "modified" vehicles, so next years WTFBA Dyno Day at Hypertech will be MUCH more interesting when I have my heads and cam!

And to top the day off.... I got to ride with Mark Heffington (owner of Hypertech) in his twin turbo Lingenfelter C5! OMG...Talk about a VERY SMOOTH ride! It felt like taking off in a jet... real smooth and very quickly (not jerky) pulls you into the seat! Breaks the tires loose at 4 grand! What an awesome day!

Amped96.... I believe Roger has your dyno sheet. Contact him to see how you want to get it.

Hypertech video taped all of the runs so the video should be available on the net in the next couple of weeks. I'll post a link when it's available.

    Edit: Can't speel! ;)

Jason if you have any pull with those folks at all... I would love to get one of these for my '98!

Hey, by the way, I ran my car up at Beech Bend yesterday with the 120 shot, and pulled a 13.7 at almost 102mph... That was with the fuel pressure dropping off on top end and cutting the nitrous off.

You guys planning to head up this way anytime soon? I think I know some folks who are riding down that way on the first leg of the Hot Rod Power Tour next month, I may tag along too...

Too bad you didnt do any 87 octane runs. When I changed programming to 87, my 1/4 times got better, and I had 93 in the tank.

Jason, congrats on the numbers! That 200hp mark is not far off at ALL!

John_D: When i was doing my dyno run, i was talking to the tech who was setting it up/driving it on the dyno and he said that they have not forgotten about the 98 and below 3.8 cars. He just said that the 98 and below cars have completely different computers from the 99+, so from hypertech's perspective, they might as well be totally different cars. They said that they have just had more priorities lately and that most of their market lately has been trucks, especially the turbo diesels.

By the way, my car dyno'd 173 hp and 211 lb-ft (not sure what RPM's, havent gotten my prinout yet ). I'm pleased with those numbers, since the car was dyno'd in 3rd gear to avoid the governer and all i have done is a SLP CAI, 3" catco cat, !maf screen, and dynomax muffler.

Dominic: I have a friend that made similar comments. He said he runs his car on the 87 programming with 93 in the tank and said it felt faster. His car is a '00. (P-nut on the board)

I've got dyno runs (not with the 3" cat and 3" s-pipe) with the 87 tuning from little over a year ago.... net gains were not as much as the 93 octane. Not sure about 87 octane tuning with 93 in the tank, though...

Sheesh! I still can't bring myself to putting on the juice! ;)

I think several of us might head to Nashvegas to run the PowerTour back to Memphis. I'm not sure if I can make it yet or not. We still need to get with you guys to do some Silicon Motor Speedway racing! ;)

Thanks for the congrats, Matt! I'm just wondering if running a 160º t-stat with my mods would have pushed me to the 200 mark!

As it was explained to us:
The HPP3 is designed for stock and near stock engines with up to minor modifications like intake and exhaust mods.
The new products that are planned will be for those with major modifications such as blower, turbo, and cammed applications that will retain the ease of use like the HPP3.

When major modifications are done to an engine, fuel and timing curves are moved. The HPP3 is based on the stock/near-stock fuel and timing curves which is why some people cannot and will not benefit from the HPP3.

That is how it was explained to us. Details of the new products were not released to us so I don't have any more information than what I give you. I'm sure it will be known by everyone when Hypertech releases information on their new product. All I can say is, after the experience our association had this weekend... I'm a Hypertech customer for life! ;) They worked extremely hard for over 12 hours dynoing over 30 vehicles in our association and all of them had a smile on their face throughout the day. That night, 5 of them joined us for dinner and they all were still in great moods! We've been invited back next year as this has become an annual event for us. Hopefully, by the next event I will have my heads and cam work done and become an alpha tester for one of their new products! :D

I ran the 93 octane mod for a while, yet it had power but the car felt/smelt/ran funny. I turned it back to normal, ran it for a while, then reprogrammed it with 87 octane mod. The car felt/smelt/ran much better than 93 and still stronger than stock.

P.S. Jason, when are you gonna beat my 1/4 mile time?

My best run was April 2002 before the 3" cat & s-pipe and with a bad coil causing 8º KR throughout 3rd gear. Since then, I've only run once since then at MMP on a hot summer night and you know that MMP doesn't prep the track for TnT so those runs sucked with 2.2 & 2.3 60ft times. I find that Solo II autocrossing is MUCH MORE FUN than drag racing, so I've been doing that instead! :D I'll get back out there one of these days... just gotta find the motivation to go... (maybe September at F-Body Gathering in Bowling Green) ;) Drag racing is pretty boring to me now.

what id like to see, is some stuff for the 3.4.

its like, since its not "current" in the camaro/firebird anymore, it doesnt exist?

hypertech is completely ignoring the 3.4 OHV (at least the way i see it) and im kinda outraged. it'd be easier for them to make a 3.4 programmer cause you could use it from 93-95 and you wouldnt have to make more than just one type of program (wouldnt have to interface with difference in sensors or programming in the ECM..since they are ALL THE SAME!)

just dunno whats up with those guys @ hypertech.

Jason, I didn't know you had gotten into autocrossing... I started a couple of weeks ago. We run at the Nashville Superspeedway. It's pretty fun. I'm in STX with my headers and rear sway bar. So I'm gonna get bigger wheels (lower profile tires) and better front brakes as long as I'm up in STX anyway...

I'm sure they are ignoring them, because there is such a huge market for 3.4 products compared to the stuff they are working on.

From what i have understood, on cars that seem identical, the computers change every year. They would still probably need to make a differ programmer for every year of the 3.4.

If you are referring to my best 1/4 mile run, it was with all the mods listed below minus the 3" cat and 3" s-pipe and shift light. I was running stock cat and stock s-pipe feeding into the 3" Borla. Since the Borla is an LS1 Borla, the I-pipe started just behind the rear of the tranny.

The dyno run from this Saturday is with all the mods listed in my signature. Again, the first run was with Borla closed and the second was with the Borla wide open. Open Borla netted 3 RWHP & 1 RWTQ gain over the closed Borla. Proving once again that there's no torque loss with it being wide open. As a matter of fact, there was more torque throughout the powerband with it wide open. SOTP isn't always the best dyno! ;)

It's addicting, isn't it!? :D I've been with the SCCA for a year now and membership expires in May. I don't think I'm going to renew this year since we've been house shopping here lately. There will be more time to race when my wife finishes her Masters degree next spring and we're settled in our new home.

Matt is correct... that's been the problem with getting a programmer for the 3.8 all these years. Every year from 95, the 3.8's had a different computer program, different memory addresses, different protocols, etc... basically a programmer's nightmare!

quote:
hypertech is completely ignoring the 3.4 OHV (at least the way i see it) and im kinda outraged.

Hypertech had a programmer out for the 3.4L F-Bodies for several years. However, nobody bought it and sales were so poor they quit making them. There just wasn't the market they expected. Like today people say they want something but when it's offered, they don't want to cough up the money to pay for it. Sorry to say but the 3.4L's had their chance with a programmer but blew it... I doubt you'll ever see another one come along for the 3.4L F-Bodies.

And just so everyone understands, I do not have any "pull" with Hypertech nor am I a representative for Hypertech. I am just a VERY HAPPY customer of Hypertech who happens to be VERY LOCAL (4 miles) to them, and who is willing to loan my car to them for a couple of days at a time! :D
