  • How can a 3.4 get better MPG?

    I've done a search, but I still have a few ?s

I get 16-17 MPG. Occasionally 18. I changed my O2s and fuel filter not long ago. My plugs and wires are 30K old, and normally people say "Oh change those!"...but I got the SAME mileage when I did change those plugs and wires when they were new!

I have 108K now. The cat is stock (I think), and everytime the car runs and I go the the exhaust there is a smell of gas. Yeah all cars have that, but this smell is the stronger scent of exhaust. Would a new cat help MPG?

Anything else I should check? EGR? I'm not going to block of the EGR (emissions and winter warmth).

Oh yeah and everytime I run injector cleaner nothing changes

what type of plugs you running cause if your using standard copper ones then it is prolly about time to change them. Also look into you coils you prolly never changed those and they are nine years old it might be the time for those babies to get changed.

Also pcv valvle might need changing. Also it could be a simple thing of needing a new air filter .

The smell of gas means your car is prolly running lean. A bad cat kinda smells like rotten eggs.

My 3.4 getts 18 miles around town and about 22 on the highway. I use to get 16*20 but the CAI and Catback gave me the extra 2 mpg.

Also give a good dose of seafoam through the brake boost vaccume line

ABH what did you do to your car to get that millage?

How old was your car when you got that milage?

Also were you a m5 or an A4? Manual always getts better gasmilage.

I did the Seafoam thing before through the brake booster line....no change.

Gas smell means I'm lean??? I would've thought it meant my mixture is rich!

Yes, these are the standard plugs and wires...the dealer put them in when I got the car.

Where is the PCV valve located? And how much do new coils cost?

It was an auto. It was a 94 I bought in 97. Besides the standart tune up, I inflated the tires to 40psi. I let off the gas at the shift point so that vacuum shifted the tranny.

No jack rabbit starts. Rather a smooth acceleration from a stop. In short, I babied the thing.

My first car was a 74 Ventura. It got a whooping 8mpg in the city. After reading a phamplet on fuel economy, I did the above, plus other things I don't think you can do on a FI car, and got it to 11mpg.

Usually gas smell from the exhaust means you aren't burning the whole fuel mixture. Mine was like that till I changed my plugs and got MSD wires.

I found out that my plugs weren't gapped correctly from the parts store. I assumed that when I told them what I drove, they'd give me exactly what I needed with the proper gapping. Be sure to get a gap checker next time you get plugs and set them to the factory specs.

I do the Seafoam thing at least every 15,000 mi to help keep the engine as clean as possible. It won't give you a noticable gain but it should be part of a regular maintenance program.

If you're wanting to spend some cash, an MSD DIS-4 ignition is supposed to give nice gains in both the HP and MPG departments. In the same respects, a catback and intake will net the same gains. Good luck.
