• aluminum or not?

A guy on here is selling an aluminum driveshaft for $150. Should I scoop that one up or just get a 1 piece driveshaft, to eliminate my crappy 2 piece, 3rd gen oem driveshaft for $25? The 3rd gen one will work on my car? It's either that or save up for some 3.73's

$150 is a good price for an aluminum shaft, but unless you're doing serious racing, the 1-piece steel would be just as sufficient - the only real difference is that you shave a few pounds with the aluminum shaft.

K, I think I have pretty much decided on the $25 one, since it is so cheap! Thanks fellas!

i think what Dan Vincent meant by 'no real difference' is that the aluminum 'only' sheds 10lbs off the rotating assy. freeing up about .1 in the 1/4.

so i mean if a tenth is no real difference to you, go for the steel.

Not all of us go for the 1/4, Ian - and a good driver can easily gain that tenth themselves. Yes, it is the little things, but considering the mods he has on his car right now, the regular steel driveshaft would be a major improvement over the risk of the two-piece he's got, and the money saved would probably be better spent on other mods.

There's also the risk of twisting the aluminum driveshaft, but I haven't seen anyone actually do that.

ive seen a Z28 do that but unless someone does an insane amount of boost or juice, us sixes shouldnt worry.

Happend to one of my friend with a Mustang. He wouldve been dead if it wasnt for the driveshaft loop. I wouldnt worry about it happening if you arent running 11s or 10s.

Well, as of right now I have headers(coming in today), 3" catback, the free mods, a thermo coming in soon, whisper lid and holley filter, soon to come a LSD with probably some 3.73's, and looking at a 3" cat. I don't plan on doing much to the car performance wise after that, so would the regular ds be sufficient? Or should I splurge a little and pick up the aluminum?

I went by the mods listed in your profile, you must have upgraded since you last updated it. ;)

Reducing by 10 lbs can't reduce your quarter time by one tenth of a second. I thought the rule of thumb was 100 lbs for a tenth? Now, yeah, if you're into weight reduction, 10 lbs here and there can add up, but an aluminum driveshaft by itself will at most take .01 off your drag time.

a driveshaft is rotating mass and the rule of thumb is close to .1 for 10lbs of rotating mass although I don,t know if the aluminum driveshaft has been proven to be worth a .1 in the 1/4

That would be a fair distinction, wouldn't it? My mistake.
