  • RPM won't go pass 1800

I was cleaning my car and had my hood partially openned. I think I wet something and caused my RPM to be like this.

What do I do about this?

Unless you really know how to work on and fix a car, i'd take it to get it fixed. If you dont wanna drive it out there because of the rpms, then get it towed to a body shop or whoever would fix it for you. My guess is that its a problem with the transmission. anyways, good luck.

Could you tell us a little more about the problem? You are driving the car and the RPM's will not exceed 1800? or are you revving the car in neutral, or all of the above?

It does it both ways. I can tell it's running rich because it sucked fuel fast.

Tranny is fine and it can go to 50mph but it won't pass 1800rpm. Same in nuetral.

          errr....

          let it dry??

thats a new one to me.. definatly sounds like and electrical problem..

I wouldent even know where to start..

I guess look for corrosion.. on wires.. check out the connections on the PCM.. look at your transmission wires..

perhaps start pulling connections and spraing them with electronics cleaner..

no error codes?? i would check thing out on autotap.. look for suspect activity..

i know thats not really specific help.. but, that is what i would do with the information that you provided..

You are not getting an SES light or anything of that sort?

Coils got wet? Maybe take a heat gun on a low setting (and at a safe distance) and try drying your electrical connections? Here's what I think: no spark, no ignition, no power, running rich.

I think you're right. I checked it this afternoon and it is fine now.

It really scared the heck out of me.

Well, I should kick myself in the rear. Definately a lesson to be learned.

                Thanks for the advice guys.

If your car was running really rich, I suggest checking your O2 sensors and replacing them if necessary. They could have had their effective lifespan shortened a bit and will cause issues down the road, but it's entirely possible they're fine.

I'm just getting into the F-body/3800 game, where are the 0-2 sensors and also where is the pcv. I really think mine needs changing.

Changing PCV is pretty tricky but Pontiac dealer assured me that they can last for a long time. The O2 sensor is not that hard. I've changed the '89 twice already. I may change it soon on the other one.

The PCV valve is SOOOO easy to change! It takes 2 bolts, its right ontop of the upper intake manifold. It takes about 5 minutes, tops!.........

Amen. It took me a minute or two, and the lid even says "PCV" right on it! Remove spring with valve, remove spring from old valve, place on new PCV valve, reinsert, replace the cover, and bolt it down again.

lol on your 96 your have 4 (four) O2's the one in the bck of the cat = easy, one in front of cat = easy.

one on diver side = better draw up plans, passenger side = start up the furnice and fab a remover.
