  • Which Oil Filter?

    Ok, so I thought the Fram filter with the grip on it was the shiznit...but to day in O'Reilly I saw a display for what I think is a new filter. It is called "Wix" and its made by Dana (yes, the axle people).

    Anyone ever used this and is it any better than Fram? The thing I noticed (they had them cut apart) is that the fram has cardboard ends on the element whereas the Wix has metel ands and just looks more sturdy.

    Didnt see a price though.

    BTW, for anyone interested. A trick that Evan (Only4U) told me. If you have a 3.8L, instead of using the filter that the little book in the store says is the right one for it...buy the filter for the Trailblazer's 4.2L. It is longer, holds more oil, and therefor you can put a full 5 quarts of oil into the engine instead of just a little over 4.5 which is how much it will take with the recommended filter.

    I use Puralator or Fram. If you change your oil on a regular basis, it shouldn't really matter.

      I'm not sure how long they've been around, but I've heard that Wix is pretty good.

          Wix is good...but right now, i'm using a fram (the one with the bed liner painted end). It's for my dad's old 4.3 liter blazer that got wrecked (he had bought it before the accident). Fit good for me! (and it was free, too!)

            Beats me, I really doubt the metal ends make much of a diff. I mean, its not as if the filter takes lots of abuse or anything. I suppose if its the same price, go for it, but, if its lots more expensive, I'll stand by my Fram. My Dad has used it as long as I can remember, its the only thing I've ever used, and I've never had problems.

              The 4.3 litre mod is a "free" mod from zzperformance.com it works great.
              SLP CAI, Flow Master exhaust, Pace Setter ceramic coated Headers, Hi-Flo CAT, Stage 1 clutch, Posi rear end, 180 thermo, Edelbrock C/O front H/D rear shocks... More to come.

                Just threw on the Bosch oversize filter yesterday ($5) and the 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 at Wallyworld ($19).

                Although I forgot the BMR shock tower brace sits right over the fill hole, and no long neck funnel to get it in there right (bent up a short funnel and managed)

                  I have alwaysed used AC Delco filters in my GM cars so i see nothing wrong with the good old PF47. For 3bucks you cant beat it. [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img]

                          Just be sure to run the 3980 / PF52 long filter and 5qts of oil instead of the PF47 / 4.5qt.
