  • Car won't start, possible fuel problem.

    Heya,

I have a 1991 Camaro RS V6 ATX. Yesterday it ran out of gas, and I had to run home to get some gas for it. The gas had been sitting in a 5 gallon can in my garage for maybe 2 months, we used it to fill our lawnmower. I ran back to the car and filled it up (probably around 4 gallons) and tried to start it.

It started up, but sputtered and hesitated and any pressure on the accerator caused it to stall. The fuel gauge reads a little above a quarter tank. Eventually after stalling out so many times it just refused to start. We pushed the car home using my Mom's car and left it outside.

I just tried to start it again (almost 12 hours later) and nothing.. The engine turns, and you can smell gas, but it just doesn't want to start. Something I had noticed is that the distinctive whine of the fuel pump is missing.. When I put the ignition into the "on" position before starting it I can always hear a whining coming from the rear of the car, which I have been told is the fuel pump warming itself up. I can't hear it anymore. What the hell happened? Did i just suck up a lot of sediment from my fuel tank and clogged the lines up? Or is the fuel pump shot?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you very much.

Get the fuel pump tested to see. If it is the fuel pump and you replace it, replace the fuel filter too. There must be all kinds of sedement clogging that filter by now.
