Noow I've read that itis commonly understood that Chevy underrates the power of the Z28 and SS's Ls1 (305hp actually being closer to 345) but in seeing different posts of dyno numbers of 3.8 liter engine cars that are around 160-170hp, does that mean that the six bangers are overrated?

The rating of 160-170 is at the wheels, the ratings that come with cars are taken from the flywheel. You lose about 20% of your horsepower through your drivetrain. Cars advertised having 200 horsepower (such as 3.8 f bods) only have about 160-170 to the wheels.

the LS1 motors have been running a dyno at what GM says is at the flywheel.

so they put somewhere around the 300 mark to the rear wheels.
