  • PLEASE Help with drl's and fog lights

I bought my car wrecked, and it was put back together for me after I bought all the parts. It's a 97 camaro convt. Any how, my fog lights don't work right, and my drl/parking lights don't work right. With my fog lights, when I arm/lock the car with the key fob, the fog lights flash as they should. I can't get them to come on at all with the switch though. When the switch is on, they flash with the alarm, when the switch is off, they don't flash. Also, there is no light on, on the switch itself. I now noticed too that when I put the high beams on, the light on the fog switch now comes on. Something with the wireing has to be messed up, right? Now the parking lights/drl work fine until the low beams come. The pl/drl's go off completely when the headlights come on. Could that just be a wrong bulb, or related with a wireing problem? Hope someone can help. Sorry so long.

I don't have much advice, but I can tell you how my '98 works, which is mostly opposite of what yours is doing.

The drl's go from high intensity to normal parking lights, when I turn on just the parking lights, or turn on the headlights. So if the low intensity filament is burned out (in both of them), that could be why they seem to go completely out when you turn the lights on. When I turn the turn signal on, first the bulb drops down to regular intensity (or completely off?), then starts flashing.

The fog lights on mine go off when the brights are on. Also the light in the switch goes off at the same time. They do flash when I set the alarm, if the switch is on. They come on and stay on, when the parking lights or headlights are turned on.

Sounds like something is backwards with the dimmer circuit, if the fog lights are coming on with the brights. Since the fog lights do work at times, the bulbs, sockets, etc should be ok.

Can you get just parking lights, without turning on the headlights? If not, the bulbs could be the problem there. I wonder if when those bulbs are bad, if it goofs up the fog light operation?

How many bulbs are on each side of the parking lights? 1 or 2? I'm thinking it's the wrong bulbs he put in there. I'm still stuck on the fog lights though. With that, i'm thinking he has the powerwire for the fogs hooked up to the high beams as opposed to where it should be. Is it hooked up to the low beams normally?

On mine, there is one parking light bulb on each side. It runs the "bright" filament during the day, and drops down to the "low" filament when the parking lights or headlights are turned on.

Yep, the fog lights are normally tied into the low beams. Not sure about relays, tie-in points, etc.

A Haynes manual would probably have the wiring diagram.
