  • x hp = y tenths...?

Ok, first off, I searched, got losts of posts, went through them, and I didn't find what I'm looking for.

The specific question is how much hp = .1 second (approx).

I have a huge list of potential performance mods. I don't want to spend a million dollars to make a v6 as fast as humanly possible. I do want to get the most bang for my buck, and stop when the dollars get too high for the gains.

So for me to rate the potential mods, one factor will be potential tenths of a second they will take off a quarter mile time.

For weight I am using 100lbs static = .1 second
    and 10 lbs rotating = .1 second

But how many hp = .1 second (in our typical cars of course)???

So I could spend 200 on a 1LE driveshaft for a tenth. Or I could spend $??? on an exhaust for 5-10 hp which = ??? tenths? How many tenths am I willing to buy, and in which order. That's the general idea. Of course the hp estimates are subjective, but that goes with the territory...

Not looking for a list of mods, just the hp=tenths data so I can come up with my own list.

Not too sure, but I think it's like 5hp for each tenth? Somebody help me out here if I'm wrong. All I know is before I got the whisper ram air kit and premium gas. I was running an average of 15.3. After the above mods along with removing my subs(70lbs or so), yesterday I ran an average of 15.0(3 Passes:15.016,14.981,15.106).

it depends...the faster you get the more power it takes to decrease your E.T.

That's true, so let's use stock as a baseline, or somewhere in the mid to high 15's as the starting point.

Since I am wanting to rank mods, more than calculating precise e.t.'s.

Just something to relatively compare weight related mods to engine output mods, to put together a top 5 list, in order.

Good luck, you're going to have a hard time doing that.

Mods don't effect everyone's cars the same, especially considering what someone already has or hasn't done to their car, and the fact that amount of horsepower required to go faster increases exponentially.

since it takes exponentially more mph to decrease linear time, hp requirements will also have to be exponentialy increasing for each tenth. Also, after you have so much hp that you spin the wheels off the line, you will need to achieve better traction with tire, suspention, lsd, ect. you are also forgetting that what rear gear size you have will dramatically affect your 1/4 times by multipe 1/10's. here are some basic low cost mods to get better 1/4 times: lsd installed, 3.42 or taller rear gears, whisper lid, k&n filter, remove maf screen, 1LE aluminum driveshaft, HPP3 or Jet Chip, cat-back exhaust, 2400-2800 stall torque converter, remove jack and spare tire, transgo shift kit, transmission cooler. the only thing here that won't give you more hp is the torque converter, shift kit, tranny cooler, rear gears, lsd, and tires, however, they will allow your engine to put more power to the ground EFFICIENTLY, without it being wasted in tire smoke or drivetrain losses or to not being in the optimal power band to get as much hp to the ground at one time as possible.

So, if I'm running 15.7 basically stock, does anyone know how many additional hp takes off another 1/10? (approximately)

Earlier, shortdog273 mentioned 5 hp. Is that the correct number?

It sounds a little light, but maybe it's right on the mark.

It depends on how much the car weighs... If the weight stays the same, say 3500lbs, and you run a 15.7, you need another 3hp to goto a 15.60

If youre running a 14.0 with that 3500lb car, you'll need +8hp to drop a tenth.

I hope that helps... these are physically calculated values given the same amount of traction/track conditions/etc.

That does help. Thanks Cardinal and Shortdog for the info. Seeing the difference over a range helps too. Looks like I need another 35-40 hp to reliably be in the 14's.

I am thinking really hard about a high flow cat, catback, and nitrous (85 or so) at this stage.

And if I do go with nitrous, and get into having to change plugs more often, probably putting headers on at the same time as the rest of the exhaust.

I believe these are good positioning for a s/c later...

But they add up ($) fast, don't they!
