My friend is getting heads/cam installed next week on his 1998 trans am. He wants to know if it would be a good idea to spend the extra 1000 dollars to get new pistons, rings, and bearings installed or will the stock ones hold up. The motor has 62,000 miles on it right now. The compression will be 11:1 after the heads cam swap.

Stock CR is 10.1:1 ... The LS6 gets 10.5:1, and has stronger pistons I do believe.
It might be a good idea. You can probably learn more by posting this on one of the V8 boards, though.
My personal thought is, why the hell not. :D

How in the heck is he raising the compression so much from a simple head/cam swap. In order to raise the compression that high, he would have to be putting some domed pistons in. Not to mention the fact that at a 11:1 compression, he won't be able to run pump gas.- Josh
If you have any questions or need installation pics/help, e-mail me: Viper98885@aol.com
\'93 Camaro Hardtop
\'01 Lincoln LS8 Sport
\'00 Yamaha YZF-R6
Full Throttle Performance

Oh, by the way, stock bottom end will be fine for a LS1 head/cam swap. Be sure to use good valve springs though depending on which cam profile you go with.- Josh
If you have any questions or need installation pics/help, e-mail me: Viper98885@aol.com
\'93 Camaro Hardtop
\'01 Lincoln LS8 Sport
\'00 Yamaha YZF-R6
Full Throttle Performance
