• concerned about annoying problem after repair

I just had to get my rear main seal and crankcase fel-pro gasket fixed/replaced. The bolts also appeared to be loose so they tightened them as well. At first everything seemed fine, but then I started to notice more and more that when I'm driving around 29-32 mph and go WOT the trans won't shift into overdrive like it used to prior to the repair. What does everybody think? Suggestions, comments, concerns, etc? What could it be and how can I fix it? Also my car seems to be a little sluggish of sorts. Not all the times but only some of them. I tried resetting the PCM, twice. I even checked and cleaned the air filter to make sure that wasn't the problem which results in a lack of pep/power. I can still dust the little ricers that are around the area , but I just don't like not having that overdrive downshift at that speed like I used to have. Let me know what everybody thinks. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advanced.
-Chris

Do our cars have a cable kickdown, or is it electronic? I've never taken out my tranny, so I don't know. If it's a cable, it sounds like it's not attached. I've dealt with this many times on other cars. You have to remove that cable every time you take out the tranny, so maybe they just forgot a reassembly step.

I can drop into O.D. any other time but it seems that as soon as I get to around 29-30 mph it won't do it. It also seems that now its harder to have it drop down into O.D. even at lower speeds, such as 20 mph. If you start off like normal acceleration, then you floor the accelerator it goes into O.D. but now after the repair it doesn't seem to want to do it. Its seems to be harder to do and almost impossible to do it at around 29-30mph. I thought that our cars were electronic since its the 4L60E automatic trans. I'm not sure, but if it is the cable how can you check it out. I'll probably have to take it in to them again to have them check it out. The only other thing that I could think of is that my cat. converter is going bad and becoming clogged, even though it was replaced only a year ago. Any ideas, suggestions. Thanks in advance again.

I dont know about that OD thing but I do know that our cars will (at normal driving speeds) drop into OD at about 45-50 mph.

I don't have an automatic transmission, but why would you want you're car in OD at 20 or 30 mph? I know I would never put my M5 in 5th at 30 mph, and they're just about the same ratio (A4 OD is .70 and M5 5th is .72).

Sometimes I really wish I had my Chilton's Manual here at work. If it kicks down at all, it works. It's just not adjusted to your liking. I'd go back to the repair shop and tell them your kickdown isn't adjusted properly. For early cable kickdowns, you would unlock it, take up the slack, push the accelerator to the floor to set it, then lock it back up. I don't have a clue how this compares to our cars. Hopefully this will give you a little insight for troubleshooting.

I think you are a little bit confused. I have a 3.8 a4 and mine won't shift into overdrive until i hit about 60. You don't want to be in overdrive at 30 mph. You will be very slow. Overdrive is for when you reach high speeds, not low speeds. Also to answer your other question, when you hit the gas if anything it will shift out of overdrive into a lower gear giveing you better acceleration. You would have crappy acceleration in od all of the time. Just think of all overdrive realy is, is your 4th gear. about the same as the m5 5th gear. hope this helps
