  • low oil light/sensor

I have a 1994 3.4L just under 100k miles... I went on a 5 hour trip a few weeks back and my low oil light began to come on. I added more oil to it and the light went out next start up... but then came back on the next day. Drove back home 5 hours and took my car to get an oil change immediately.

The mechanic said I actually had a quart or two too much oil (obviously after i added it the previous few days)...

Anyhow so i'm all tuned up and new oil and filter and the light still comes on! It comes on pretty much every time I start the car now, but if I start the car and turn it off immediately and restart, the light doesn't come on.

My dad said my oil sensor probably went bad and the mechanic can fix it no problem.

Just wondering if its a common problem? And I wanted to make sure that the ONLY thing that would bring the low oil light on would actually be just when you are low on oil. If thats the case, I definitely have a bad sensor... Any other ideas? Suggestions?

Last question, any ideas on cost to replace?

    Thanks,
    Mike

The sensor is cheap and VERY easy to change out. If it is faulty, you may as well change it. It is the sensor on the side of the oil pan and is called the oil level sensor.

My oil light stays on and i got a new oil sensor and it didnt seem to fix the problem but i have enough oil and everything i just leave it alone and check my oil often, ill prolly try to change it again cause it dont cost that much but im in no hurry, if there could be any other ways to fix it let me know cause sometimes that light bugs the crap out of me. also when i go to start it, if i turn the key to the on position and let all the gauges start then start the car it wont come on until like a hour later. if you fix it let me know

^^^ That could be a shorted wire somewhere. You should follow the path of the wire from the sensor to make sure that it is not pinched somewhere to frayed.

I will post an update as soon as I get my problem checked out. Right now i'm in the midst of finals and will not be returning home probably until Christmas eve. However, I have the entire month of January to get the sensor checked out, so I will post my results. Thanks for your input!
