Limp mode

Do our PCM's have limp mode? I'd say so for when it sets a serious code, like the misfire codes that make the SES light blink.

I've been told that ANY code will set the PCM to go into limp mode. Well my SES light has been on for about 2 months now, and I've ran my best time with that thing on it. Its for the stupid P0420 code (catalyst system low efficiency) because I have a leak at my converter.

Is this true for the OLD OBD 1 ECMS? Anyone know more info on this? If my PCM is in limp mode, I CAN'T WAIT to see how it runs when its in normal mode.

I'm going to assume that's what the reduced engine power light is for. IIRC, in the manual, it says when that light comes on, the PCM reduces the power of the engine, along with other things because of a serious (?) problem, and that you need to take the car to a mechanic immediately to get it checked out

Yes, it does have a limp mode. The "Reduced Engine Power" light will come on.

Has to be a serious problem for it to come on though. Your P0420 won't put it in "limp mode".

The car will go into limp mode, and it will retard the timing significantly and I don't think it lets you rev over 3500 rpms...


Mine went off once, I seafoame, let it stall, pulled the MAF off the car then cleaned the TB and started the car with the MAF off, got it to crank since it was flooded to hell, it started but was very sputtery then popped into limp mode, I stopped it reinstalled maf, then fired it up, drove it a little, shut it down restarted and all was good.
