I say technology and just what's in. Back during the 3rd generation look and see how much the 8's were putting out. Heck in high school, the 5.0 mustangs were one of the fastest things on the road. Now our cars can beat them without any problems. But because of the import craze a few years back, once again it's in vogue to have high HP engine. Just look at how high v-8 power is on newer engines. The 3.8l Series II is basically like a 15 yr old design.

Yup, engine technology is getting better. 25 years ago big-block V8's were making 200-some HP because of emissions restrictions. It took awhile for manufacturers to learn how to make computer controlled engines that get better gas mileage, produce less emissions yet still increase power. VVT, multi-valve, multi-displacement, etc.
Many 6 cyl cars are now making in the 250-275 horsepower range and the LS2 is up to 400 hp, something that GM hasn't achieved since the ZR1.
They are raising compression ratios quite a bit on a lot of cars nowadays to get more performance out of em...I wonder what our car would put out if the cr was upped to 10:1 or higher?

any thing above 10 you need lots of tunning and stuff...... our heads are only like 64cc i think
and even at 10 your going to need like 93 fuel
also high C/R helps lower emisions cause it burns more of the mix becuase of the hotter temps in the chamber
