• Funny Smell from Engine After Running It

Engine had a funky smell coming from it after a short quick run, not coolant smell, seemed like it was coming from near the alternator. Never really smelled it before though.

Can you smell it after a running the engine for a long period of time? Any leaks on the ground (being a fluid)? I had this problem but mine WAS a coolant leak...needed a new water pump.

Look for coolant, could be oil, coolant and even better battery acid.

there should be a little diagram telling you where each major component is on the car on the right strut tower (near there)

it should show where the gen (alternator is)
water pump, etc.
check for the major stuff around the alternator, then check that stuff extensively. Most likely it is a coolant leak.

btw, the coolant resivour is under the battery (atleast on my 99).

when they had to replace the battery tray on my car, the part was 1 complete piece (battery tray on top of the resivour).

its just a little plastic thing, but there might be a hole in that.

Tried to track it down and here's what I found. The smell comes from the top left part of the engine compartment (near computer). But, just for kicks I got under the car and smelled and it seemed even stronger near the cat I have. If the exhaust leaked from there, would it smell any different, seems like it could be leaking from it. Ideas?

Can I just let you know how funny I bet that looked...You sniffen around your car like a hound dog...Crawling under it and stuff...Whew thats a funny picture...

Could it be and electrical smell, like wires or alternator? I had an old dodge that the battery would arc out on my brake lines when it would fall over and make a funny smell...

Before I saw the light and switched to the other side, I was a mustang owner. One time my altenator went out on that (smoked up a parking lot believe it or not, but it had a bad smell just prior to starting to smoke bad enough that I thought my car was on fire! just a thought. Might wanna get the amps checked make sure they're still running right, if not, bearings could go out on the alternator!
