quote:
What is the mpg for a 3.4? 3.8?

I have a 1999 Camaro 3.8L with an automatic and I get 28 mpg with pure Interstate driving. I put the SLP CAI, Whisper Lid, and K & N Filter on a few weekends ago. I haven't gone on any trips to compute my Interstate mpg with the mods until this weekend. I will be driving back to Omaha from KC tomorrow and will compute my mpg with the mods. (I didn't compute it on the way down).

It would be nice to get another 1-2 mpg but doesn't really matter to me if I don't. If I was worried about gas mileage I wouldn't be driving a Camaro:)

The 3.8 is EPA rated 22/30 city/highway. I get 32 or 33 highway cuz I use Z-max fuel treatment. Thats the only thing I've done to change fuel economy other than add a KnN filter. Oh yeah the SLP CAI is on the way.

dude, z-max is just so you know, a CAI would do a good job on increasing fuel economy

seriously, check out z-max on an search engine, and you'll find a whole bunch of legal actions brought against them for mis representation in their ads

I calculated my gas mileage back from KC yesterday and I got 30 mpg (actually 29.8) which is a 2 mpg increase on the interstate after the slp cai, whisper lid, and K & N.

I believe the 22/30 EPA rating is for the manual transmissions. The highway rating for the automatic is 28 I believe.

You can check the mods below, but I think the HPP III decreased my mpg. I just got 27.5 mpg from Buffalo to Pittsburgh last week. (I was in the 29-1 at one point.) I also have an O2 sim in my fourth O2 Sensor that might not be helping. Just an FYI, there is a difference between summer and winter gasoline that may be offset by air density (i.e. winter gas has more propane and ethane which is farther away from octane but the air is much denser in winetr.)

I use the cheapest 87 octane gas I can find, bone stock, I manage to get 34 MPG with my M5, 3.08, and between 65-70 MPH.

Haven't checked what it'll be with 3.42's but it should be negligable.

If only I had a Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive kit. I'd have a 6th gear ratio of 0.58:1. Dunno if a stock V6 would push that much gearing, may need more torque and gearing. But if you could drop cruising speed to below 2000 RPM, you'd really see some gains in MPG. I just don't favor blowing 2 grand on an overdrive kit on the car that isn't my all-out project.

Now I thought that the A/C had a clutched pulley so If the A/C is not on, then it takes no power from the belt, and when the A/C is on it takes power from the belt to run this. With that said, then wouldnt it make more sense not to use the A/C.

AC will kill your gas mileage... its better to take the wind with your windows down...

                      Wrong. edit: sort of

The power los thru using the A/C is less that that lost due to the additional drag from having the windows down at highway speeds.

The key phrase being "at highway speed"

edit: The A/C cycles on & off. The clutch is not always ingauged when the A/c is on/running.

after 3 pages, and writing every tire manufactuer I could get a hold of. 35 PSI on the street if you are a spirited driver. 30 PSI if not.

M5's come with 3.23 rear gears, not 3.08's.
2001+ 3.8's were rated at 19/31 from their window stickers (manual). My 2000 Camaro M5 was rated at 19/30. As I stated earlier I never saw less then 25.5mpg's. I never had a chance to do all out highway and clock it, but I'd have to imagine mid 30's. Heck, 3.42 gears in my WS6 and I pulled over 30mpgs on a long trip (around 32-33)
