  • Bad Alt????

well i just got back from a mechanic because i think my alt has problems but i cant be sure

from what ive read on here searching thats what im thinking but the alternator guy that works on alts thinks it might be electrical instead

what has been happening is my firebird stays around 14 v and never has a prob but on occasion it drops to 13 and dies its never died before but in the last few days it has done it twice

the car starts straight away after and goes right back to 14 and it will be days before it moves

the alternator guy wants me to get someone to take off the alt so he can test it seperatley from in the car (i was hoping hed have done that)

anyway i know nothing of working on card so i have to take it somewhere else that will do it now

just wondering if anyone has any ideas or if im right thinking its the alt

    thanks
    best wishes Adam

Take off the alternator (fairly easy if my weak A$$ can do it, u can too) and spin it, if it makes lots of clicking noises.....most likely it's shot.

After pulling the alternator, take it over to a local auto parts store. They'll test them for free. Make sure the guy knows what he's doing. It took me three different trips before the guy working the machine finally noticed it wasn't putting out enough juice...
