• Yellow leak is back...

this happend a while ago and the Midas dude coudlnt figure it out, I showed him the (brake booster?) that little thing that holds the brake fluid... and it had fluid pretty much on it, and it looked like it was running down the shock tower and to the floor where the puddle was, the fluid was a sort of yellowish color but at some places looked blue... i know my brake fluid is blue, and he was like " naw its just spillage" why is it spilling when im sitting still overnight? now its back and there is quite a considerable amount of fluid on the ground, i took some pictures to show you guys, i also had to fill up the brake fluid again a while back, and now its about a half inch below the MAX--- line, and i filled it TO the MAX line last time i filled the fluid a couple weeks ago, so it all seems to be pointing towards the brake fluid... any suggestions? the leak seemed to start after i installed the front shocks and springs, perhaps i stretched a brake line or somthing? that wouldnt explain the leakage from inside the engine bay though....

and if brake fluid is blue, why is the stuff on the ground orange? unless i have two leaks and im leaking engine/tranny oil.... im going to go check the dipsticks..

    thanks guys

      mine is...

if you look at the first link you can see the brake fluid container, and the fluid is blue, thats why the container is a pale blue color...

thanks for the helpful post though... not trying to be an *** but this could be a serious issue and your post was not in the least bit helpful....

i have never in my life seen blue brake fluid if there is some thats kinda cool but were do you buy it?

brake fluid should look like water only you can't drink it......

try getting a wrench on those lines and snug them up.

look for cracks in your master cylender. also make sure the rubber seal is in your lid and is good shape, no holes, cuts, or cracks.

clean that up and have someone in the car stand on the brakes/pump them and see if you can see it, were something over your eyes, you don't want that in your eyes.

i know, im just pissed about my car leaking, sorry man if i offended you, i tried not to sound like an ***...

look at the picture! its BLUEEE

but the liquid on the ground as you can see, is organge-ish...

AHHH!!! it just came to me, the liquid pics up dirt and rust on its way down the engine bay! THATS why its orange!!!

i am positive that the leak is from the little brake fluid thing!! its even all wet around the sides of the fluid thing... im not sure if its from the actuall thingy or if its from the booster or where it connects... im going to find out....

ill have someone stand on the brakes right now
            any more sugggestions? thanks guys

i recently refilled it... the Midas dude told me it was just pillage/overflow...

i dont see that being the case, i think theres a crack somewhere or somethings not tightened good...
i remember removing it for my shock install....

perhaps i didnt tighten it back up well enough...

              ill check.

That brake fluid thing is your Master Cylinder. It can have many of leaks.
                  Look at the easiest first:

-inspect the cap and the rubber seal under it. If the seal is bad, brake fluid will leak out when the brakes are applied semi-hard to all-out emergency braking.

-Check the seal at the bottom of the master cylinder where the plastic meets with the metal. Normal braking should show a leak there.

-Brake lines where they connect. If you do suspect a leak from the fitting there and it won't tighten anymore, unscrew the line and inspect the flare at the end that fits up against the master cylinder. You may have to use a little teflon tape when re-tightening the brake line screw back into the master cylinder, if the screw looks like it's not in the best of shape. But don't use too much as it could cause the bolt to not get seated properly when re-tightened.

-Look where the master cylinder meets with the brake booster. If you can see it leaking from that connection, then it's possible that the seal inside of the Master Cylinder is bad, and you'll need to replace it.

I'm not totally sure, but I don't think the brake booster carries any fluid, just vacuum. So we can eliminate that.

ok i looked at the thing again today, i have massive leaking now, i have at least 4 puddles on the floor and they are more blue now, and the fluid in the master cylinder is down to half of the container... so im fairly sure that it is the same fluid...

now, when you say to brake, should the car be on or off?..

i have noticed some fluid where the master cylinder meets the brake booster, but that could be where the actual leak is running... so im not sure, i also feel some fluid on the backside of the master cylinder (close to the firewall) where i cant actually see it with my eyes, perhaps the thing is cracked... how much do they cost to replace? and do i have to drain all my brake fluid?

I'm guessing you pulled the master cylinder to get to the shock tower bolts when you replaced your front shocks/springs. I did the same thing. Luckily I didn't overbend any of the lines or crack anything. Possibly you did though.

I've never seen blue brake fluid either, although I suppose it's possible. Are you certain that it was DOT3, 4 or 5 brake fluid? If you put something like say, power steering fluid in the master cylinder, it would eat right through your seals. 'Course then you'd have stopping issues too.

All the brake fluid I've seen looks and pours like vegetable oil. Brake fluid that needs replaced looks like vegetable oil after you've fried up some chicken in it.

its blue, and its dot3... i bought it at napa or kragens or something and that is the first time i have ever put it into my car, the original stuff that was in the car was blue as well and that was before i put anything into it... so maybe older birds.

yes i pulled it to get at the shock tower bolts lol...

is there anyway to remove the master cylinder completely to inspect it?

i cant remember what i did to the master cylinder though, maybe i unbolted it from the booster... ill have to check, can i unbolt it and try redoing it?

also, it smells nast-ay and looks like there is a small amount of algea in there...

are you loosing brake pressure when you stand on them? I just did my shocks and springs also and I removed the master cylinder from the booster, I would probably suspect the lines or the connections from the lines to the master cylinder as said before in this thread I would start by putting a wrench to the fittings on the lines and work back from there. Hope that his helps.

You most likely unbolted the master cylinder from the booster, that's what I did. That way it can be moved out of the way by bending the lines slightly. You could disconnect the lines that go to the ABS but then you'll have to bleed the brakes. You could at least check for dampness at the back of the master cylinder, or is it coming from one of the lines or the plastic tank?

Your brake fluid might be getting foamy on top if there's air getting in. Also, if any regular brake fluid got mixed with the blue it would probably look greenish.

i can feel fluid on the back side of the master.. and i can see it leaking from the booster... which is where i unbolted it from, so i assume either the master is cracked or leaking and maybe its running down and just LOOKS like its the booster leaking, or the booster is leaking, but that would mean i have two leaks cause the back of the master is fluidy...lol
