  • Operation: Acceleration

    Here is the basics:

1996 A4 Camaro, SLP CAI, 2 3/4 I-pipe, 80 series Flowmaster, and Taylor plugs. 3.08 gears, stock cat.

Basically, my acceleration sucks down low. It is especially horrible from 30 mph. For example, slowing down in traffic then having to speed up again.

I have 3.42 gears and an LSD in the garage waiting which will go in sometime in November. Shortly after, I will replace the stock cat and fresh o2 sensors. It depends, but I might also pick up a 1LE driveshaft too.

Hopefully that will help with my acceleration and performance in general but any other ideas? Headers/nitrous aren't an option until maybe next year.

i have that too pay good attention to my post

SINCE WE HAVE TRANNY YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE GEAR RATIO OF IT :: 1GEAR STARTS IN 3.06
    2GEAR GOES IN 1.63
    3GEAR 1.10
    4GEAR IS 0.76

IF YOU TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THE SECOND GEAR YOU WILL SEE THAT IT HAVE A BIG GAP BETWEEN THE FIRST AND THE SECOND ABOUT 1.43 SPACE AND IF YOU GO IN THE THIRTH GEAR YOU WILL ONLY HAVE A 0.53 SPACE

IF WE CAN CHANGE THE SECOND GEAR FOR 2.08 WE WILL NOTICE A VERY GOOD ACELERATION

THIS IS THE SHIFT PATTERN I THINK THAT WIIL HELP US 1ST GEAR 3.06
    2ND GEAR 2.08
    3TH GEAR 1.10
    4TH GEAR 0.76

(NOTICE THE SECOND GEAR BETWEEN THE STOCK AND MINE)

Is there a lot of difference in acceleration with a Camaro/Firebird with 3800 V6 auto. vs the same vehicle with a 5 speed manual box?

The difference (what you call space) between the gears is not the problem...its the ratio between them. 3.06/1.63=1.88 while 1.63/1.10=1.48 and 1.10/.76=1.45....its that jump between 1.88 and 1.48 that makes the big difference.

There isn't much that can be done to change the gear ratios in the tranny. This would require new gear sets which would be prohibitably expensive. I have not heard of a close ratio gear set for the 4L60E.

But a tranny gear change isn't needed anyway. What will really wake up an early 3.08 car is a torque converter change. Apparently, the stock stall speed for the early 3.08 cars is about 1800-2000 RPM. The problem is that at 30MPH you are probably in 2nd gear with the tight torque converter holding the RPMS low. At low RPM you have low torque. A higher stall torque converter, even a stock converter from the later model (2000 or later) with 3.42 gears, will really make the car feel stronger because when accelerating at low speeds the RPMs will be higher (at least 2500) where the engine makes a lot more torque.

The 3.42 gears will also help in this regard but with a higher stall converter even the 3.08 gears won't be so bad.

Higher stall TC and some lower gears. Enjoy

Actually this would probably be utterly worthless. I'd garuntee you would never want to drive the car around town again. Plus the poor automatic on the highway would commit suicide.
