  • Car won't start, No clicking sound either.

When I tried to turn my car on, it didn't click or turnover. My radio and all will come on just like normal, just doesn't start the car. I was reading in my maintence manual for trouble shooting and it says if the power comes on to it but no clicking sound, then I might have a faulty Solenoid in the starter. Could this be my problem? Where is the solenoid at?

I just got through driving my car then I went back out to install some new front turnsignle lights and I remeber sorta smelling like something was burning kind of like burning plasic. I figured it was just from all the heat from the engine bay. Should I have my soleniod replaced and are they very expensive at all? Thanks for the help.

Well, so far I'm guessing its the starter, but I just need to know where it is so I can check all the wires and stuff. Anyone have an idea how much a starter/solinoid assembly cost and where the heck it is? Thanks

I would make sure that it is the starter before you go messing with it because it's kind of a pain to switch out. I would definatly try jumping it first. But the starter is bolted to the bottom of the engine, on the passenger side I believe. The little pinion gear comes out and spins the flywheel/flexplate. You'll have to take the Flywheel/flexplate shield off to get at it, it's what spins the flywheel. In order to get it out, you'll have to either bend or remove some transmission cooler lines, make sure you don't break them if you bend them though, it'll make a hella mess.

Well, I know its not my battery because I checked my connections to the battery and their find. Everything works on my car like headlights, radio, and all, and my headlights are bright as normal. I guess I will have to call a repair shop tomorrow or something. I'll get underthere soon and check connections to make sure my solinoid wires didn't come loose or something.

I had the same problem. Turn the key in the satart position for about 20 sec with the E-brake up. It has to do with the chip in the key

PCM? Might be, I just now checked my car again and this is what happens.....turn the key on to start...no click or cranking but my radio and all will come on BUT my DRLs don't come on and you know when you put your key in the start postion the battery reading needle goes up and gauge lights come on? Well mine don't, just my radio comes on and if my doors open the it will beep. So im guessing its not the Starter now.

Is that what happened when the PCM went out Gregg? How much did it cost you all together to get it switched out and all? Maybe thats what's wrong, I've acctually had my SES light on for the past 8 months with no problem at all it would just go on and off radomly and lately its stay's on 95% of the time, so maybe it has been malfunctioning or something. Well, let me know what happend when your PCM went out. Thanks.

A funny thing happened to my 86 T/A once kinda like this. I got stuck at a mall one night because my car wouldn't start but everything else worked fine. Tow Truck Driver showed up and tried to jump my car WITH my battery terminals connected, car wouldn't turn over. Got it towed home and the next day I replaced the Starter and Starter Wires...still nothing! I put another battery in...BANG, started right up for me. Turns out the battery had a bad coil in it and trying to jump it wasn't doing anything for it because the connection was crossing + and - inside the battery housing. Why everything else worked, I don't know. It just went bad all in the sudden, no pre warning or nothing. My advise, check the battery first, it just might be causing your problem.

Battery should be fine, just replaced it a couple of months ago when a coil in it went bad, but my car does EVERYTHING except light up the gauges, click and turn the DRLs on, so i'm guessing its not the battery. Plus, when the coil went bad in my old battery, I still got the clicking sound and all, just when it all of the sudden happened,I had to jump start my car. So I seriosly doubt its the battery, im gonna try to have it checked out tomorrow and see if its something I can fix myself(I hope it is).

BTW, I did the 20 secs in start with E-brake on, but I got nothing. Ne ways, if anyone can still help, please tell me, I really hate to have to pay someone to fix it if its something I can do.

lol, yeah its in park, trust me, but I did checked that anyways just incase I didn't have it all the way in or something, but my car just got towed away to the shop and im guessing it might be in the ignition or something. I hope its something pretty simple maybe I'll know by tonight if they find out anything. I'll let you guys know incase you ever have this problem. I hated to see it towed away but it needs to be fixed, I got a wedding to go to this weekend (my boss's daughters) and she expects me to be their since i've know thier family for so long and graduation is the saturday after that, but im sure it'll be fixed by tomorrow or thursday.

Same symptons... I think PCM is the right term. The thing the key goes into which reads the plug on the key. There are numeious posts which will help you all throughout this site. It was under warranty so I can't help you with costs...

Are you sure it's not the battery. ;) I've had 'em go down to where the lights and everything would work, but the starter wouldn't work. Check the voltage on the battery, then get someone to try starting it and see what the voltage drops to (if it does at all).
