Has amybody else noticed a dramatic increase in low end power when the motor is cold verses when it is warmed up? I don't have any proof of this other than the "seat in the pants feeling", but it feels as though the car is MUCH MORE responsive (and quicker low end) when the motor is cold rather than at operating temps. I plan on buying a G-tech meter soon to hopefully get some comparisons, but I wanted to know what everybody else thought.
I believe fuel is more dense (potent) when it's cold. It cools the fuel down just before it enters the combustion chamber. I put one on my 86 T/A and noticed a little bit of a difference.

Oops! sorry...I put a Cool Can on my 86 T/A. A little cooler for your fuel.

I don't know the exact technical side of it but yes your car will be faster when cold I cut .2 of my 1/4 time just by letting my car cool all the way down!
Maybe has to do with the air under the engine which is where you get your air from(stock). I know that colder air is better because it's more dense than warm air which leads to more air in the engine. Kind of the whole premise for a cold air intake. I don't know if you would actually FEEL a difference from it. But maybe in conjunction with hockeyman's cold fuel reasoning it could be noticable.

Yea, same as stated before with the cold air being more dense....I always let my car cool down like 30 minutes at the track towards the end of the evening when the sun is down and it's getting cool. Then when I go run it, I always somehow get my best time of the night!

Thanks for the replies! Maybe when I put the CAI mod on it'll even out the air flow more, and be more consistant throughout the temperature range. I'm going to wait to do that til I get the G-tech though, because I want to have a reference point to start from and monitor how what changes improve performance by how much.
not cold fuel...
fuel in liquid state does not combust.
cold fuel is in liquid state therefore it does not burn.
colder air contains more O2 because it is more dense. plus, at first start-up, your engine is in open-loop operation and will naturally run a bit more aggressively because its relying on more sensors for fuel delivery (vs warm closed loop operation where the primary fuel input is the O2 sensors). the trans should shift more firmly when cold as well...
i would not make a habit of running a cold engine at high rpm's. let it run a few minutes first...
btw, 160 stat only really works with manual fan switch. idling, the coolant temp will still get up to around 210 or so before fans turn on....

I dont think it has to do with the cooler air for the most part... i mean when your car is just started up, its "warming up" it richens the mix just a bit and that gets you the more power.. you can actually hear it click over once it stops doing the warm up stage.... thats why with a 160* thermo you get more rich of a mix and get more power.. I wouldnt reccomend doing too much romping on a cold engine, definetly isnt good... thats my .02, and I am sticking to it!

REALLY??
I know a 160* stat helps performance but will it really make that big a diffrence?
If so I'm gettin' one tomorrow.

No not really, but you should install a manual fan switch at the same time. Leave the switch on low to keep it around 180, and high to keep around 160. Also blast the heat to cool the engine down if needed.
Hey everyone! I've been trying to remove my transmission for two days now! I need to replace the clutch. Only thing I've got left holding the transmission...
