well my car has 65k on it and i have yet to do anything regarding the fuel filter/pump. what's the best thing to do with this...either cleaning or replacing or whatever it might be? and anything else besides the most common you could think of with any other parts of the car...

Replace the whole car and you wont have any problem.J/K LOL

Replacing the fuel filter is a very good idea. I would just leave the pump be until it goes out. I just replaced the fuel pump on my friend Blazer this weekend and though it was not hard it did take 4 hours or so. I would do it again if I had to but not if the pump was still working. The fuel filter will take you 30 min to change out. Its not very hard and if you do it right you wont get a more then a few drops of gas on you.

one more thing. Once you pull the Fuel pump fuse connect the Neg cable and crank the engine for a few seconds that will take the pressure out of the lines.

Being that it is a '97, and has 65k on it...

The belt probably is due to be replaced by now.

Some people also routinely replace the radiator and heater hoses around the 4-6 year mark. I usually wait until they feel soft like they are about to pop, then change them. You can check in the bends and the low spots, usually these go out first. I may go ahead and change them out when I replace the coolant next spring.

Batteries are usually good for about 4 years. If you still have the original, I would replace it before cold weather sets in. (I plan on doing this to my '98 this fall.) Everytime I've had a battery die, it was the winter after the 4th full year on the battery.

Water pump and alternator should be good for 100k-120k miles.

Check the brake pads. They may still be ok. I still have the originals after 77k miles. Just depends on whether it's mostly highway or mostly stop and go.
