Doing a manual fan switch tomorrow

I'm planning on doing a manual fan switch tomorrow. i'd like to cool my car down in-between runs at the track. I have a switch in my car already, the previous owner had neons hooked up to them but he removed them before i bought the car. i hooked up strobe lights in the footwells, but i got tired of them since they barely work. i'm gonna remove the strobes, and then run some wire from the switch to the fan wire. would i be better off tapping the low-speed or high speed fans?

If you're doing it mainly for track use, you need to cool down pretty quickly. I'd say go with the high-speed.

or used a DPDT center off toggle and run both the high and low speed. you can aslo run LED's to show what fans are on.. would look something like the one I made ;)

hey harlan, nice to see you made it over here.

i already have a switch in my car i can hook it up to, however it is only an on-off switch. it was used for neons in the footwells. I'm probably just gonna tap the high-speed fan wire, since i'll need to cool it down quick in between runs.

Be careful, the neons probably needed a 12v signal to turn on, and your fans need a ground to turn on if you go to the wires over the front passenger tirewell. Don't put 12v to them, only ground.

to do high speed I believe you need to ground both wires not just the one. YOu coudl likely both have them hooked up, and if you run into problems just through in a diode.

ok so is this how i should do it?

switch----fan wire-----ground

That will work. all teh switch will do is groun that wire which in turn activates the relay

ok wait....I have to take a wire, run it to the switch, and then ground it on a bare piece of metal. then i run a wire from that wire and tap into the fan wire?

i think the switch may be grounded already, i only have one wire that sticks out to hook into. the rest of the wiring is inside the dash.

tap into the cig lighter ground or any metal ground under teh dash, Run that wire to the switch. then from the other termonal on the switch run that to either the high or low speed wire under the hood

the switch is in the dash right next to my steering wheel. there's a wire that comes out in the footwell that i'm assuming is the wire that would have to be hooked up to the fan wire. if the previous owner had lights rigged up, there has to be a ground, right?

not always. don;t guess. run it yourself. if you ply power to that fan wire by misatke you run teh risk of burning up the driver in the PCM. not to mention burning up the relays and fuses. Just start from scratch.

ok the switch IS grounded, i took the panel off to make sure. i have a wire going through the passenger side firewall hole and running to the switch. i just need to make sure i know where to tap the fan wire. do i tap it BEFORE or AFTER the connector it goes into?

doesn't matter. anywhere on that wire and your fine [img]smile.gif[/img]
