Hey guys Im a newb when it comes to engine stuff so I am wondering what a Cam does? I do know I want one in the near future, but just wondering what a cam can and will do for my vehicle?

The cam is properly called a camshaft. You, of course, have one stock. A Camshaft controlls the valve timing, duration, and lift.
Aftermarket cams tend to hold valves open longer, move them higher, and get them to the max open value faster.
There is an awful lot of confusion on camshafts, cam design, etc, and so I recommend you hitup google and do a good few days research just to understand how it all works.
