Ok so a few days ago it worked fine and now it doesn't move at all. I was thinking that maybe it was a short to the gauge itself. Everything seems ok the fan still come on and goes off like it should so I guess it isn't over heating. Just wondering what I can look for under the hood, I looked but didn't find any loose wires or anything. Could this be a more serous problem?
do you have a 160* stat?? if so, thats what happens.. your computer goes into open mode and cuts off your gauges and turns on the fans... if not, prob. a sending unit or sensor... easy fix, go to Autozone or a place like it and replace it. no more than $20 bucks. GM gauges suck so It shouldnt be too big of a problem.
your computer should not shut off the gauge unless if it thinks it is getting bs readings.
and if it is thinking its getting said bs readings, replacing the sensor will not fix it permanently, it'll just shut it right back off.
I betcha if you reset your computer (pull pcm ign & pcm bat fuses, wait a min or so, then replace. the fuses are under the hood on the driver side), it would come back on, and then about a week later or so, go off again.
That is what happened on my car when the mechanical thermstat stuck open. They replaced the sensor, it worked, and 3 days later, it went back off. So I took it back in, and they checked the mechanical thermostat, replaced it, and haven't had a problem since.
If resetting your computer turns it back on, for however short a time, I would not waste money on a new sensor, take our your thermo, if its open when you take it out (a hole in the middle), then it needs to be replaced.
BUT DO NOT DRIVE your car w/ the thermo out, put it back in, go to the auto store, drive home, then replace it. Your car will overheat if you drive w/ out a thermo (water will flow too fast).

Ok I'll try to reset the computer after work today, but it shouldn't be the termo. because I just had it replaced, when I had my engine worked on. But I will try anyway you never know.
On your left cylinder bank, right behind the power steering pump is the temperature sending unit. There should be a single green wire into a sensor-like unit on the cyliner head. Make sure that it's connected.
