  • oil fouled spark plugs causing misfires

Recently I had really bad multiple misfires so I checked the obvious things. . plugs, wires, all connections. I found oil on plugs 2,4,and 6. I replaced them and the misfire went away. today I checked them again and they have oil on them again. What could be causeing this? There are no valve cover/ exhaust leaks.

My Chilton manual says that an oil-fouled spark plug indicates an engine with worn piston rings and/or bad valve seals.

it only has 70,000miles on it so I doubt it's the rings or valve seals. PCV though maybe I'll check it out thanks. Would all the plugs have oil if it was the pcv or just the ones on that side?

miles have nothing to do with something like that it all depends on how the car was driven and taken car of. Did you buy the car new or used.

I've had the car since about 12,000 miles. It's been taken care of and not driven too hard.

I was talking to a friend about this and he brought something else up that I was kind of wondering about. would changing from mobil 1 to say max life do anything? He was saying something about that some synthetics will "leak" easier than other oils.

I'm going to go ahead and change the oil tonight, clean those plugs and see if the mineral based oil has a harder time gettin to em.

              valve guide seals.

Has the car been running rich? Unburnt fuel or running way to rich would cause he gas to eat the seals.

It hasn't been running rich as far as I know.
what are the valve seals made of? rubber?

how much is this problem to fix? how hard? i found oil on my plugs when i changed them out this past weekend... i had a hardcore misfire for a while, and fouled the plugs, so i swapped them and found oil.

I swapped the oil from mobil one to valvoline maxlife. No more oil on the plugs.

Thats a band aid. But keep using the max life until you get money saved up to replace the seals.
