Paperclip trick on OBD1 computers

hi, im curious, how the heck do i do it?

Turn you ignition to the ON setting and jump two pins on the plug. It's the two pins farthest to the right. Good luck, it doesn't work for everybody.

I tried it that way too. I had to go see a mechanic to pull them.

shadly, what did they use to pull your codes
because im getting a service engine soon and autozones obdII thingy cant find any codes people have been telling me i have an obdI, but thats BS cuz it has a obdII plug

Your car should have the OBD2 style connector so you can't flash codes via the SES light......however, in case you're interested or need to do this on an older car, read this:

With the engine and ignition turned off, locate the ALDL connector under the dash, just to the right of the steering wheel in the driver's foot well area. There should be a small rectangular cover over the access hole in the lower dash trim.



Insert a tool as described above (paper clip) into the 'A' and 'B' terminals on the ALDL connector:



WITHOUT STARTING the engine, turn the ignition to the "RUN" position. Watch the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and it will begin to flash. This is also commonly called the "Service Engine Soon" or "SES" lamp. The first code will flash three times, and will usually be a code '12'. This is encoded by one flash of the lamp, a brief pause, then two successive flashes of the lamp. Each code will repeat three times, so you should see a "Code 12" flash three times. Any other error codes will follow in numerical order, and each code should flash three times. After all codes have been displayed three times, the "Code 12" will again flash three times, then all other codes will follow as described earlier. This cycle will continue until the jumper is removed or the ignition is turned off.

After you have made a note of all error codes, turn off the ignition and remove the jumper immediately. If you forget to remove the jumper and attempt to start the engine with it in place, you could damage the ECM. For this reason you should remove it immediately.

Honestly, I don't know what he used. I know it was new and I know it cost $10,000, but I don't know what it was called. It's supposed to pull codes from everything. Autozone probably won't be able to pull your codes. They're counter-monkeys, not technicians.

just because you have an "OBDII" plug doesn't mean you have OBDII, it could be I...

I have no freaking clue why ppl keep calling it the OBDII plug since it is documented it was on OBDI cars, so how could it be something before it exsists? Hmmmmm....

It's OBDII type. 16 pin instead of the regular 12 pin on OBDIs.

The ODBII Standard was in research and development almost imediately after ODBI was introduced. People call the connector ODBII because it's the same 16 pin connector used on the newer computers (True ODBII)

In late 94, early 95, the ODBI computers were attached to a harnes that terminated with a 16 pin connector that is the same as the ODBII computers.

I HAVE A 3RD GEN AND WHEN I JUMP MY TWO PINS THEY ARE THE ONES IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. BUT MAKE SURE THE CAR IS OFF AS YOU JUMP THE PIN. THEN TURN THE KEY TO ON. THE ENGINE LIGHT WILL BLINK CODES FOR THE PROBLEMS........
