if i put on 8.5 msd wires how often do i have to change them?

They should be good for a decent amount of time. If you have a multimeter, you can check the resistance to see how far from stock they are. Brand new, they are about 50 ohms/foot. Really though, until they are a cause for missing, you should be okay.
