  • possibly burning oil?????

i did an oil change today..first of all i drove the car hard so the oil would be nice and hot..so anyways i jack the front end up and pull the plug...let it drain completly..about 2 hours.. and then take off the filter and pour the contents of that in the container, i plug the drain hole and put a new PF-52 filter in and fill it up with 5 QTS valvoline 10w-30..so after i get done fillin it i our the old oil into the 5 qt container and i notice that it only filled the bottle up a little past 4 qts..so that means that i burned about a qt of oil or is there that much left in the motor..

so is my car buring oil..i dont smell anything differnet,i do drive the car hard everyonce in a while but im not abusive..

whats the deal and is it normal?
im not really worried..i check the oil level at every fillup and its always fine..i just want to know why im missin about a qt of oil?

It's normal. You actually ARE burning that oil, but it's normal. The film along the sides of the cylinder on each stroke is where it goes. It also goes out the PCV valve and into your intake. The harder you drive, the more oil you lose. Plus, some of it probably stuck to that catch pan you used. 1 quart in 3,000 miles really isn't bad.

Ummm how the heck are you fitting all 5 quarts of oil in there? Ive changed the oil on 5 firebirds and a camaro this week *mine* and all of them have taken 4.5 quarts EXACTLY. I work at a pontiac dealer now so thats how i get to change all that oil...LUCKY me. ANyhow are you using a bigger filter or something?

some oil will still be in the lifter valley, stuck to the cylinder walls, bottoms of the pistons, on the valve train, when you change your oil all 5 quarts dont come out!!
