Paint on clearcoat

My friend used some of the spray touch up paint on his door. It fixed the scratches but now you can see a big dull spot where he painted and it looks like its just sitting on the clearcoat. Can he just buff it out or what? Thanks for the help!

Buffing will help some. You will be able to see an outline of the area that was sprayed and the color will look a bit off. For it to looked good it needs to spayed with a gun, blended and clear coated. Almost impossible to do with spraypaint. Not to mention majority of the spray cans sold are laquer which auto makers haven't used in almost 15 years.

This should probably be moved to Appearance though.

I heard using clay bar might help get rid of it..any idea on that?

Not sure how much it will help. From what I understand the bar clay works more with minor blemishes in the paint. Spray paint is real hard to work with to get a decent look out of. I'm guessing it was just sprayed with paint and not clear coated over it. The suggestion I have would be wipe the area down with a prep cleaner designed for auto surfaces, wet sand the area with 1000 grit paper, get some clear coat(they sell it in spray cans), spray the area with the clear coat. Spray it larger than the area that was painted and feather it out towards the edges. Don't worry too much if is dry towards the edges. When it's dry wet sand it with 2000 grit paper then buff it. A tip I have is for any body work and this includes sanding scratches, useing body filler or painting, make sure you feather it.The more feathered your work is the smoother the transition from the original to the repaired spot will be.
