• 2 step system for the V6?

at a car club meeting a couple of weeks ago, one of my LS1 owning friends joked that i set up a 2 step system to make the most of my gears and new drag radials.

at first i laughed, but i kept on thinking about it and performed a little research.

it looks to ME that it's basically just down to installing a performance ignition control box and the 2 step module, for example: MSD 6AL box and MSD 2 step controller.

it almost seems too simple, so i wanted to address the body of knowledge here and see if anybody had tried it yet.

With an M5, it can be done with HP Tuners. I'm not sure if DHP will do it, but I don't see why not as it's the same parameter. I'll found out soon enough. ;)

The problem with doing the 2 step by cutting the spark is the catalytic converter. It will catch fire and burn up if you send un-burned fuel through your exhaust. If you do not have a cat, go for it or check out Harlan Engineering.

He makes a nice 2 step.

If you have a cat, you have to do it by cutting the fuel. This can be done with HP Tuners (I had it set for 3000 rpms with street tires) and the launches were very consistant. Good luck.

eehh the MSD only cuts one piston in a oder and the next time fires that one (softtocuh rev) it really don't let tons of fuel dump in there and if it is NOS or boosted motor you better to cut the spark then the fuel in case KR would happen you don't want it lean too

which method? harlan, hp tuners, or MSD controller?

            i don't run nitrous.

i do have a "catalytic converter" installed, but only by the letter of the law, not the spirit. it is in no way functional.

seeing that the price for a box/2 step is approaching the price of hp tuners... there only seems to be one choice. i had no idea hp tuners was that capable.

good points from all of you, thanks

When you're getting ready to launch, you just put the pedal to the floor and your RPMs stay at a set value (say 3000). As soon as you let off the clutch, the limiter goes back up to normal (6000, etc). Makes for easier launches, since you just floor it and leave it there. Same can be done for Autos as well. ;)
