hi fellas, glad to be a part of group, thanks. i have a 1999 firebird with the stock 3800 v-6 in it and i have had mine up to 115 m.p.h. and let off the gas. have never topped it out yet. i was just curious as to how fast it would run. does these firebirds have a speed limiter and if it does. can it be disabled? if there is any simple mods i would appreciate any info and thanks very much.

Welcome.......
I think the speed limiter for your car is about 115 mph. Someone correct me if I am wrong. They dont make a Hypertech programmer for your car so things like raising both the speed limiter and Rev limiter will be a real pain.

Yes, the speedo governor is 118-119.
Not that I have ever gone that fast. :D
And i believe that they do now make a hypertech programmer for the 3800 Fcar. I saw one somewhere about 6 months ago.
The reason that the birds come with that programmed in as a governor is because the stock tires are not rated for speeds higher than 120 mph. It can go faster than that, but according to Scott Settlemire, former brand manager for camaro and corvette cars at General Motors, all cars have a rev limiter level for engine protection, but there is also a setting that limits engine rev in top gear to prevent someone from driving at a speed faster than what the tires are capable of withstanding. To have the rev limiter removed, you can go to a custom programmer and have them change it, but this is usually expensive. I will see if I can find a link to the hypertech for the 3800 fbody.
EDIT: here it is!

I stand corrected. However, I believe that all the 3800 V6 engines for all years are the same. Does anyone know of any differences between the earlier years and the later years? Did the 98-99's have electronic throttle control? he might also want to call hypertech and ask them if the 3800 tuner will work on earlier 3800s.Property of Dave Hamburger

Hypertech does not make one. I own a 99....I spoke to them and they do not ever intend to make one. the 00-02 model Will not work on the earlier ones. It checks the pcm vin # and if the code is not right the programmer will not work.....
