The original stock pulley for the tensioner and the AC idler was plastic. The pulley was changed to metal and is now the only replacement for the early cars.

I know, as my 1996 tensioner plastic pulley (and belt) came off the car at 75mph. They had to replace the entire tensioner. I then also replaced the AC idler pulley with the metal pulley.

Both my 97s have (had) the plastic pulley, the Firebird still has the plastic one but the GTP is the one that melted and flew apart. No pics as we couldnt even find it.
At 11pm its hard to find right parts so we got a tensioner from a non supercharged 3.8 and used just the pulley.
Aftermarket still uses plastic pulleys so it was later changed out to a GM metal one.
