i knew i was gonna get flamed the second i typed that, but that was my instant response and i'm sure there were otheres reading this that laughed when he asked a second time if he should get lsd or "posi"...if he'd opened his manual before his mouth he'd know the answer. and yes, an lsd is better than an open for whoever said that it wasn't...i hate my open in the rain (when i'm not trying to lose taction)...all the power to the wheel w/ least resistance, it's like a wuss of a differential.

From my experience, I'd rather have an open diff in icy situations. It will power one wheel because chances are that one of the wheels will have more traction than the other, even if both are on ice the static and kinetic friction values can be different. If only one wheel is spinning, everything is fine except you aren't moving. If you had LSD and both wheels are spinning, you're probably not moving forward or backward, but sideways.

I don't know if anybody understands what I mean, but for fbody's, this is what I think. Different applications are a totally different story.

you my friend, are a grade A idiot

          think of it this way.

you are trying to accelerate up a icy hill in your open diff. car. The tires start to spin, only one since you have a open diff. This makes your car go sideways.

I did a completely 360 in these same conditions when i had my camaro with the open. diff. Posi by far is better for icy situations.

same goes for stuff like trucks that tow boats etc. You don't want to back up the boat into the water, and then not be able to get the truck up off the ramp because its wet and slipery and you are going sideways because you have an open. diff.

I could get both posi & open cars to go sideways on ice, w/o even trying. Yes, posi is infinately better in the snow/ice/rain/water. Limited SLip Differential is liek a "new school" term, also attributed to traction control, but not always. Posi, as in my 77 T/A had 3.23 gears, 4sp, & a posi rear was not just a marketing ploy, although I'm sure it didn't hurt ;) .
