If the starter was broken, you would not get the Security light.

Do you have a multimeter to check the key by itself? It's just a whole lot easier/cheaper to just wire in a resistor rather than replacing the ignition cylinder.

Then that must be 11.79 K Ohms, which is a valid resistance.

If you want to try adding in the resistors, here's a pic of where it goes: http://shbox.com/1/air_bag_disc_2.jpg
Just add in the resistors in series between those 2 wires. Any resistance in the area of 11500-12000 Ohms will work.

great. i thought i told you guys about the key already <--me

so do you think the key is good and that the most likely thing is the wires to the cylinder?

thanks for the pic. i appreciate it alot.

I thought you said above that the key was 11.79 volts, which didn't really make any sense. ;)

If the resistance of the chip in the key is in fact 11,800 ohms, then the key is most likely ok.

You could easily wire in a toggle switch or something that connects to the VATS. You could mount it hidden under the dash, and just flip the switch when you want to keep the car from starting.

sorry about the whole volts ohms thing. thats my ignorance showing through. i was hoping to do a push button so when i put the key in, i leave it on run and push the button to start it. am i thinking of the same modification?

when you mean flip the switch if i want to keep it from starting, do you mean flip it to turn the engine off and the other way to turn it on?

ok, im searching but im not finding anything.
can you help me cause im searching under passkey lock and its not coming up with really naything
also looked up bypassing the ignition lock cylinder and also nothing

That would involve more than just a resistor for VATS.

The simplest way would be to just wire in a resistor between those 2 wires. This way the VATS computer would always see that resistance, and would start even without the pellet in the key.

Now let's say you wired a toggle switch in between those wires with the resistor. You'd have 1 white wire, the switch, the resistor, and the other white wire. With that switch turned off, the current would be unable to flow through your resistor, so the VATS would disable the starter, etc. But with the switch on, the current would flow through the switch and resistor, like it would without the switch.
So basically you could just leave the switch always on, and the car would start every time. You could also turn the switch off after you park, and the car would not start until that switch was turned back on, because the current couldn't flow through.

ok, so when im ready to turn the car on, i just do it normally and normally when turing off the car? sorry for all the questions, im just trying to get an understanding of all thats going on

With the switch on, the car will behave perfectly normal. With the switch off, the car will not start.

If you don't want the option of having the switch, the simplest thing to do is to just wire that resistor in. VATS will be completely disabled and you'll never notice a thing.

well, im going to try this where could i get a 11 ohms resistor? radio shack?

o', i kind of like the idea of the switch. its kind of like an extra security system plus its a way to freak out my friends who try to start my car :D

let me make sure i understand the final directions. ok, cut the two white wires, connect them to a resistor, hook up the toggle switch, and do i need to cap the end of the wires i cut and didnt use? just for safety, sparks and stuff like that? also, when i hook the switch up to one of the wires, am i going to need to ground it? i doubt im going to need to suppply a power source right?

Radio shack will have what you want, but you need between 11500 and 12000 Ohms, not 11. You'll have to use a few resistors in series to get the proper value. For example, Radio Shack online carries 5.6 kΩ and 680 Ω resistors. 2 5600s and 1 680 result in 11880 Ohms.

Not to be rude or anything, but just make sure you're with someone who knows what they're doing...don't want to damage anything down there. ;)

no offense taken cause i know im still very ignorant but im learning every day and i try hard. thankfully though, once i do a job once, i'll never have to be told a singal thing again.

anyways, i'll have my tech teacher with me helping me thank you for your help. hopefully i can try to get this fixed tomrrow at school and have good news tomorrow night. thank you very much again for your help
