• need a new 3.8

OK my engine took a crap yesterday, and Im looking for a used 3.8. My question is I have a 96 3.8, will any 95-02 3.8 work with my computer and what not? Can I use a used motor out of a GTP or any other 3.8L powered GM vehichle? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I think I may have blown a head gasket. Either that or my drivers side head is cracked. Not a 100% but first I lost a lot of power, so I parked it with the motor running and popped the hood to check it out. There was a bunch of smoke and loud mettalic banging (sounds just like a diesle engine) noises coming from the drives side head. Then the it died and I couldnt get it started. I went back to start it a couple hours later and it did start and run ok but Im not going to chance it.

so because you overheated you are going to throw in a new motor?
you are just like me, but i am putting in a V8 instead. i just got a quote for a direct V6 replacement and it was going to be $2690 with a 3 yr warranty. i just needed to get an estimate to show my bank for the loan. too bad i need another grand for the LS1 and then prolly another 2 grand for the labor.
:(

That really stinks. The engine out of a GTP wont work unless you take the supercharger off. It simply wont work in your car without some mods done to it. you really ought to try looking on Ebay to see if you can find anything reasonable there. you could also try www.speedautomotive.com and www.tacreationsusa.com to find them. And hey... you might find this a good time to just swap out to a v8 ;)

Two weeks ago a '96 3.8 went for $127 + $125 shipping on ebay. It had 100,000 miles, so it would need a rebuild, but 3.8 engines can be had for cheap.

I believe any 95-98 will work with the '96 computer. If you get a newer engine, you will probably need a new computer/wiring stuff too.

 Just a question, were they gonna give you lube? I'm about to do a direct L36 transplant. Motor $450+shipping, about 2 days work, and I got a new motor in my Camaro. An LS1 swap is gonna set you back more than a grand for the parts. I to was looking at the price, parts alone are gonna cost about $4-5k. Then add rediculous labor costs. You're looking at about taking a guess 6-7k or more including labor I would guess.

yeah but you can always find a ls1 out of a wrecked car for fairly cheap(take it i'm still talking a few grand) but that is expected. Another thing. I dont know about yall, but i know plenty of friends of mine that if i told them i were going to drop an ls1 into my car it'd be a weekend thing in over at someone's house.... and the total price for that, just get them plenty of booze when it's all finished
