  • does / could a bad IAT cause misfires ...

my IAT i have found out in very cold (below freezing) weather reads -38. does it make the car run leaner or richer. can this foul up the plugs. I am going to replace the IAT sensor today and hopefully that will solve that issue. I am not sure if i should replace all plugs, wires and coils too while i am at it. i have 85k miles and so far i have only replaced one coil pack, and plugs about 40k ago.

No. Wouldn't cause any trouble at all.

Probably need to do plugs / wires.

It would just give the wrong tempature reading. Cold = rich, warm = lean. I drove with mine unplugged for 200 miles and all I got was an SES light. I never took the time to figure out if high resistance(unplugged) means cold or warm, it depends on which way the IAT works.

the IAT does advance/retard ignition timing but only by a couple degrees. search in the advanced section for more info on the IAT.

When tempature goes up, resistance goes down (NTC). Thats the case most of the time.
