Well, there's always the free ram-air mod. It involves cutting away the baffles from the stock air intake.

    Not recommended.

Actully it's more of an inside joke.My friend who owns a 90 mustang GT always wanted to race me.Well I said fine and we raced,he blew his tranny right off the line and I kind of thought of the name right then and there.

well what i would start with is get CAI that you can make from stuff from home depot. Then you get a cut out for like 35 dollars. that the one you have to crawl under the car and unbolt. Throttle body bypass. lower tempature thermo is cheep. Also underdrive pulleys can get had for around 50 bucks.

My car does not even have AC so I guess thats a plus.I'll probably Do the Throttle body bypass sometime.Underdrive pulleys are relativly cheap compared to other mods but still it's like $50 plus shipping plus the new belt...

                      Forget what I said then.

You could go the cheap bastard route and make your own "cold air intake" by buying vent ducting... but that's really, really ghetto.

The only reason it would affect the filter is because you're getting more fresh air. I would rather clean my filter more often and make a little extra power. How about all the other cold air systems that do the exact same thing? Sounds like you need to do a search in intake/exhaust about it.

As for the topic, just get a good intake. Then an exhaust system when you get the money. ;)

I have an '02 Firebird(Irrelavant at this point), but so far I've only modded the intake and plan on exhaust by this spring. Without changing exhaust, modding the intake does almost nothing for gains. So don't expect much 'till you do exhaust. Yes, modding the intake lets it breathe better, but it's like taking a quick deep breath, and exhaling slowly...........

I probably wont make a cold air intake setup..That would kind of degrade my engine bay and make it look pretty stupid. The reason I wont really spend money on performance parts is because I see how most of my friends dump so much money in to their cars and then they struggle to make insurance payments and etc...

If you have the 3.4 you can do the TB Bypass, you can remove your air silencer and cut open your air box to allow more air to come in.
