  • Please help. Major power loss

Hi guys, I've searched around and haven't found any post that have the same issue as I seem to have. I own a 02 firebird W68 AT with about 24K on it right now.

Recently I seem to have lost a huge noticable amount of HP. When I got the car it use to take off nice as I accelerated. Now I can pretty much floor it and barley pick up speed. Jerks really hard between gears too sometimes. I dont' think its a clogged cat or fuel filter/pump. Not with that low miles. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

sounds like you have the typical "misfire" problem. I'm sure someone on here will tell you to do a search, but check your plugs and wires. The way the wires are routed they're suseptable to manifold heat which prematurely degrades the shielding. Hense, causing a misfire and eventually a fouled plug.

Guessing you have an automatic tranny too, you may want to check the speed sensor on your transmission. That could explain the jerking between gears. If the initial problem isn't a misfire.
    Good luck

Are you throwing any codes? Have your car scanned at Autozone and see if there are any codes showing up, then go from there. Also, does it studder or idle really rough?

well, when my fuel filter was clogged, it wouldn't want to move at all when I gave it gas, unless I floored it (which I did only once to see what it would do). It also sounded like it was knocking. When I had a misfire, it set off a code, and told me which wire was bad.

It is a auto tranny. I brought it in to a dealer (mistake 1) and had them scan it. cylinder 3 was misfiring. Ended up being the coil which was replaced. However upon a few days after I still have a great amount of power lost. I'm thinking to pretty much replace all the wires, sparks and coils all together. How much does auto zone charge for a scan?

That's exactly what's happening to my car, i give it gas and it doesnt wanna go at all and it sounds like knockin. How hard is it to replace the fuel filter off a 95 Firebird?

i have a misfire when it rains hard.. :( guess theres a hole in the weatherstipping thats between the windshield wipers and hood because water goes thru there and goes right onto the coil packs.. fun stuff driving around with 4 or 5 cylinders for a while.. happened to me today

One thing that you will want to do (that I didn't) is pull the fuel pump fuse, so there won't be any pressure in the line. When I took it off, one side is a clip, and the other side I just used a wrench on (forget the size). Because I didn't depressurize the lines, I used a pan and caught the fuel that leaked out. It's right in front of the driver side rear tire, and I only had it up on jack stands. If you know what you're doing, it's like a 10 minute (if that) job
