  • Anyone Changed Their Rear Main Seal? R There AfterMarket Seals??

My seal is starting to get worse and I was wondering if there are other aftermarket options that are better(READ: Last Longer) than getting a factory replacement...anyone??

Thanks for the info. I will stop by AC Delco(down my street) and see what kind of discount they will give me first.

Bump for the rear main seal question.

I've been searching the board and haven't found any more info on this other than the rear main seal is a common problem. Are there any better aftermarket gaskets? I've put it off long enough, and now my car is leaking about 3+ quarts of oil ever 4k miles

From what I gather the rear main seal leaking in a fairly common problem with the 3.8s. And, also from every automotive professional with whom I have spoken, the "only way to go" is to get a direct factory replacement.

Also, this is a very lengthy involved procedure. Not saying that anyone cannot do it, but over 1/2 the places I called said that they don't do them b/c it is an 8 hour procedure.

But, maybe that's just cracked-out pittsburgh mechanics

Oh I'm doing it myself, You need to drop the tranny. But if I go with factory replacement, I'll just end up with this same problem 50kmiles or less from now, then have to do it again.
