• Oil in coolant

Checked out my reservoir yesterday and the coolant is looking like scum, all sorts of oil in it. Any ideas what it is?

blown head gasket, causing mixing of oil and fluid. This will be a costly repair if you can't do yourself.

Yup, chances are you've got a blown head gasket. Don't drive the car until you know for sure what is wrong with it. Pull the car in the garage and drain your oil. If it looks like Chocolate milk, its pretty much for sure.

You have either a lot of work or a pricey repair coming up.

another thing to think about is... is this just in the coolant? if so do you run the orange coolant? if so then change the coolant it just gets nasty. but also check the other things like the oil and see if it is nasty also before you trust to bad coolant.

It's not coolant in the oil, it's oil in the coolant. So i don't think it's a blown head gasket. My mechanic thinks it might be the timing cover(i think this is what he said), says it the gasket needs to be replaced...

i dont think so. if the oil is mixing with the coolant anywhere, there will be coolant in the oil it might just be some old nasty coolant. just to make sure, did you check you oil?

The oil cannot be going into the coolant without the coolant going into the oil. If the two are meeting, they will exchange both directions.

If you think the oil is clean then I guess flush your coolant and see if the problem comes back.

How many miles does you engine have?
They like to let go at about the 120,000 mile mark in most cars.
