• Couple of problems, plz help

hi everybody, i'm new to modding my car and i only know a few things about it, my SES light went on about a month ago, so i had the code read and my mechanic said i need a new EGR valve, but he said it won't affect performance, it just can't pass inspection without it, i was just wondering if there was any other options i have before spending $400 for him to put a new one on.

Also i just got all new 3' exhaust system w/ flowmaster 40 series, and a couple of days after that the SES light comes on more often and massive amouts of exhaust is coming into my car, but its not visible, i feel high whenever i get out of my car, could that be from the EGR valve or did my other mechanic miss a weld?

Just 2 more questions When my rpm's get up to 3500-4000 the muffler sounds very poppy, would headers fix that?

Last one i recently changed my oil and i used 10-30 quakerstate oil and after driving for a long time when i come to a complete stop my oil pressure gauge bottoms out and the check gauge light comes on. my grandpa said since i have over 172,000 miles that i should use a much thicker oil like 10-50, i just want to know what oil would work best and would synthetic work better?

Thanks in advance and i hope i'm not an annoyance for asking to many question

4 hundred for a new egr, I can send you my used one in good condition for 200 shipping included and you can put it on yourself. It's only like 4 or 5 bolts. Just be careful with the tube that runs to you manifolds.
I think that popping sound is just the 3" pipe from the lack of backpressure. Headers would improve your performance, but I don't think they are worth doing unless you are going to run over a 50shot of nitrous, or blower, ect... But I don't know much as other people on this board.
Did you run conventional motor oil before you switched to synthetic. I'm not 100% sure that was the smartest thing to do after running conventional for so long.(if that is what you did)

Before you replace the EGR, replace the tube going from the bottom of the EGR to the intake. That tends to get blocked and gives the error. the tube is $20, so it is worth trying that before you fork out the $$$.

Just my $0.02

New egr valve should be less than 200 NEW all it takes is two bolts and and electrical connection to replace. do not pay someone to replace it they will rip you off do it your self and and save some cash

If your oil pressure dips into red and your check guages light comes on it is most likely causing a ses light so it might not be egr but it may be. EGR is dumb and my new one went out a week after i got it... so i sent my computer and when it got tuned they deleted the code for egr i cant remember the number but like code #4 or somethin. meh thats what i did with mine. good luck but oil pressure being low is bad news prob cam bearings. thicker oil will make it go up a lil but its not a solution to the problem.
Hope i helped a lil bit,

thanks for all the advice, yeah my old mechanic, which was my moms, said the EGR was $350 from the manufacturer, i'm not going to him anymore becasue he is too expensive and doesn't know what he is doing, (for example, my mom's 96 crown vic had some squeking in the control arm ball joint, but he said just grease it up and the noise will stop, but later that week she was driving home, going about 35, and the joint broke and the tire just went up into the wheel well and was flopping around, luckily she wasn't going fast becasue she lost control ) i found a new mechanic who is a f-body fanatic and actually wants to help me out.
