• Please Guys...Head Gasket Problem

alright, get comfortable...

so for the past couple wweks or so my car has been making this funny smell after im through driving it. not oil, or exhaust, just a real pugnent odor. at first it would appear then go away after a few seconds, but this past week its been getting really bad. then today im cruising on the highway at about 70-75 and suddenly the check gauges light comes on, and when i look down i see my oil temp gauge deep into the red zone. so i immediately pull over and pop the hood, and to my dismay, there's a bunch of steam and bubbles coming from right between the top intake manifold and the rest of the engine, and there looks to be damage from where the stuff was dripping and falling down onto the rest of the engine. i sstayed where i was for about 30 minutes, got it, and drove to the dealer (luckily it was pretty close, but i still had to pull over again once more to let it cool for about 20 minutes as the gauge was about halfway between the 210 mark and 260 mark. as i got to the dealer the guy gave me a lecture about checking all my fluids which i admit i hadn't changed the coolant in a while, and said the smell was burning anti-freeze. its not the fans, nor the thermostat i told him i was pretty sure. then i called a friend of mine and he said he just had the problem with his mistubishi starion and that it was a blown head gasket, which was what i was afraid it might have been.

the car is a 2002 a4 pontiac firebird with 24,800 miles on it. mods are fra, lid/filter, rumbler cat-back. still under warranty thankfuly, and i admit i race it from time to time, but im never ever really abusive on the engine. i dont floor it everywhere, nor do i speed excessively or anything. so how could this have hapenned? did the gasket get old and cruddy or was it something my dumbass did?? my friend that blew his said i prob ****ed up the head since it'd been like this for a little while, and it overheated today. think he's right?

its being repaired at the dealer so i know itll take forever  you guys think i should talk to the guys about getting p&p heads if theyre ****ed up enough? what happened??

and this is coming the day that i decided to keep the car and go FI rather than sell it off or transplant an ls1 in it....i think i have to re-think my decision :( last thing: how much power was i losing? it wasnt a major leak, but it was def noticable.

well with it might be more than a head gasket. it may have started as a head gasket, but since you let it drag on and you let the temps get high, the heads might be warped :(

anyone else? what should i do? pop for a new head and p&p it or just go for another stock one?

why would it crap out on me so soon? was it a junk part from the factory or does this normally happen on our cars??

either ****ty luck or you have let it over heat before......dont need to P&P right now. just get it replaced and have the head check for warping

Im with BLLDOGG
your trying to make your car effiecient again, not trying to mess it up even more.
have them pull the head check for head warpage,
if its not too bad you might want to get the head milled a little bit, it will raise your compression, but i already assume your only using premium gas anyways...right? =)
hopefully, the head wont be in bad shape at all, my guess is the constant heat changes may have cracked the gasket, then with you not checking your fluids and heating issues it finally gave way...
anyways, keep us updated on this, good luck with your problem
I will take on all comers...or come on all takers!!! Whichever you prefer.

thanks man, yeah im always using premium 93. and the head porting etc is just ideas im throwing out there, but i probably wouldnt end up doing it. why spend the money if all this is under warranty right? i hope your right about the head being okay. i doubt i can ask the guys at the dealer to mill it for me though. ill know more when i call on tuesday to find out just what is wrong with it.

will keep u updated....i miss my car so much :(
