water coming out of water pump snout(pulley)???

  • water coming out of water pump snout(pulley)???

    has this happened to anyone before. I cant see exactly where the water is coming from, but when i follow the belt, right off the bottom of the water pump pulley there is water. i think it is coming out of that shaft.

    Does this mean my water pump is screwed???

    I think it will cost $20 to 30$ for a remanufactured one. it doesnt seem like it would be too hard to fix, but are there any little things i should watch out for?

    I will drain the system, remove the belt and pulley, remove old water pump, install new water pump, then the pulley and belt.

    I will be using a thin thin film of gasket material just to give it the "extra" seal.


    If im missing anything in this install or you think there may be another reason for the water leakage, please let me know. THanks

    well if its coming from behind the water pump its probably just a gasket. i dont know if the pump has a seal on the pulley shaft, but if it does it might be that. by the way, where'd you get a water pump for 20 bucks?! mine was 70!

      sounds like the weep hole has opened. I know with the water pumps on the small block chevrolet motors, this means your water pump is dead. Time to buy a new one.

        if water is from behind its the seals
        if in front of the seals, then its a weep hole.
        leak from weephole=new waterpump.

        as far as your install goes, when u install your gasket, apply generous amounts of sealant to both sides of the gasket, if there is any warpage of the metals in that area the sealant will "fill the holes"

        waterpump for 30 bucks....autozone, but you have to give them your core.

          Like said, if your pump is leaking 95% of the time its dead. Just replace it.

            even if just the gasket is leaking you should probably replace the pump as well (you have a 96 so you probably dont have too many miles left on the water pump anyway). and while you have the system drained, it might be a good time to check and replace any coolant hoses.

            if you have drained/replaced the coolant in the last two years, you might as well pull the block drain plugs (knock sensors) and put in some fresh coolant.

            and, now is a good time to replace/change the thermostat.

              thats what the guy at shucks told me. I ordered a remanufactured one and it will be here thursday. It was $27.94 (49 somethin till i give them my core)

              anyways I would like to start changing the coolant hoses and stuff like that. Within the next two weeks i will hit over 160 grand on that thing.

              I did replace the thermo about two months ago.

              Anyone have an extra air damn they dont want??? it usually stays around halfway on the temp gauge and I know it should be around 180-190 while driving. When i put my car in the ditch it kinda ruined my airdamn. I will be changing my plugs pretty soon so that will be a little bit better mileage. What are some things i need to do besides plugs, have good wires, and stuff like that to make sure my car goes over the 200,000 mile mark.

              i am already suprised it has lasted this long with the way i drive. I always change my oil and fluids and use castrol high mileage.


              my biggest thing is what can i do to quiet my engine down some. it sounds like some early 80s v6 car because of all the little ticks and tsh tsh noises.

              and no its not internal ticking noises. it just definitely doesnt sound like a new car.

                  Noisy lifters and the injectors are notorious for making noises. Could also be an exhaust leak. I know my lifters have been clacking for a good 30k now, learned to deal with it. The car warms up after 30 seconds or so, they get oiled and shutup. [img]smile.gif[/img]

                    do you think my car would be quieter having just a straight pipe instead of the hollowed cat on there. I put carpet padding all under and in the back panels and carpet in the back of the car. It quieted the back up quite a bit. Its not my lifters making the noise, its hmm maybe an exhaust leak. I will put my stock intake on and just have a little pipe and filter. itll only cost me about $5 and it wont look as ghetto. hmmm do you think putting that carpet pad betwen the hood and the exsisting hood pad thing would queit it down some?
