• Firing Problems!!!!!!! Please Help!!! LOONG Start Time.

Ok, I did a search and came up more confused than I was when I started. My car is a 98 3.8L m5. It has 76,000 miles on it. When I go to start the car, it usually takes an extremely long time to start. About 10 seconds of cranking before it fires. The electrical system is fine. I turn the key to the on position to prime the fuel pump and also listened to it. It sounds fine. Makes it's normally humming noise. I have no clue as to why my car has problems starting. Once it finally fires, it runs like crap for a few seconds, gurggling and sputtering, and then it runs fine. Even while driving it runs fine. Gets great gas mileage, and runs perfect. At the rate i'm going my starter is going to take a crap too. Can anyone help me out? I thought about fuel filter, FPR, relay, check valve, I just don't know where to start. I don't want to just go replacing everything under the sun. Most of the possible fixes would also show symptoms of a problem while the car was running as well. This is what makes it so confusing to me. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Devin

start with a fuel pressure test, look for correct key on pressure and then watch to make sure that it doesn't bleed down

I had this same problem a couple of weeks ago and I went to put a fuel pressure guage on the shcrader port and it let out an air pocket and the car has run fine ever since I would definantly do a pressure check on the fuel system and you might just solve the problem while you are at it.

Don't know if you got this fixed or not, but I had the exact same problem (do you smell gas like it is flooding?). Anyway, the fuel pressure regulator was bad. The diaphragm had ruptured and fuel was being drawn into the vacuum system.

Runs great now and starts instantly. I now have a lot more power also. I guess if something goes bad gradually, you don't notice the change...

No I haven't fixed the problem yet. I haven't had time to do the fuel pressure check and I really don't even know how. I do smell gas while it's trying to crank. Where is the fuel pressure regulator, how much does it cost, and how do I tell if it's bad?

          Thanks.

go to autozone and get a fuel pressure gauge. it has a gauge and hose and hookes into the test port on the fuel rail. screw it on and turn the key on. I am not sure of the correct pressure rating but it should be around 40 or 45PSI. then just watch it for 5 mins without touching anything and make sure that it stays right around the same reading

              Hello all ! No-bee here !

I have the same problem , however , mine is mostly a hot start problem . Very seldom is it hard to start when its cold . I wonder if it still could be my pressure regulator if its only a hot start problem .

This is a nice site you guys have running here !
