  • What is the best conventional motor oil?

I usually use Castrol or Vavoline, but is there any one brand that is better than all the others? I decided not to use synthetics because my car is only a V6 and I have 80k miles on it. As far as conventional motor oils go, which is the best?

All of them have the hype that theirs is the best, but according to Consumer Reports Magazine, they are all the same.
Consumer Reports did a research on NY City Cabs. They started with ALL NEW engines, and put different brands of oil in each. Changed the oil at every 4k miles for 200,000 miles, then tore the engines apart to analyize them. They discovered that there really wasn't any difference in wear between the brands of oil used.
Article was in the march 2001 edition. Oil hasn't changed much since then...

Edit: they did not test synthetic oil.

What about oil filters? I don't want to spend more than 5 bucks on one though.

Don't know if there is any specific brand filter that out-performs another, but I use plain 'ol AC Delco #PF52 which can be bought a WallMart or K-Mart for about $3.00.

YOu're not going to notice a difference when you tear the engines apart to look. The difference is that you can go longer on synthetic without having to change, and synthetic can handle much higher temperatures than conventional oil. Will our cars reach those temperatures? Hopefully not, but its added insurance just in case. Larger oil filters should be able to go a tad bit longer too b/c they can hold more dirt/grime.

The oil question. This is my 2 cents. I have worked at a Wal-Mart tire lube express for 3 years now. 1967 camaros to 2002 comaros and every other car under the sun has been in. 3000 miles to over 300,000 miles. 60-70 cars a day. Our bulk oil out of the tank is QS 10-30. We use Fram filters, 80% use that. About 3% are under warranty still and use what is recommended by the mauf. like Motorcraft 5w-20. The rest pick & choose cuz they SWEAR by another brand that is sooo much better than anything else. Myself, I use the Mobil 1 10-30, $18.88 for 5 qts, and the oversized Fram filter so the 3.4 will hold 5 qts. I have over 130,000 & drive 5000 between changes.

I know a mechanic who wanted to prove a point so he put mobile 1 in his go to work car (88 lesabre 3.8) and hasn't changed the oil for 55,000 miles. Hasn't had a single problem. I'd never do it or recommend it but I thought it was pretty amazing. The car has 130,000 miles. He says he's never going to change it.

What point was he trying to make? Having his engine not crap out on him after 60k miles??

I'd have to see it to believe it. I honestly don't think oil will last that long.

You know you're probably right. Doesn't oil thin to practically nothing after awhile?

My friend who has been a mechanic for GM for over 7 years told me that the only reason oil gets dirty is because of some type of material inside the engine...This was awhile ago and I don't know the very specifics, but he said you could coat the inside of the engine with 'something' and it prevents the oil from getting dirty. He said you would never need to change the oil, but you would need to add more.

                            I thought it was interesting..
