Would it be worth it as far as performance wise to upgrade my thermostat from what i believe the 97 model year had a 190 degree thermostat to a 180 degree or possibly 160 degree thermostat? I can get the stock 180 degree thermostat from gm and slp makes a 160 thermostat for v8s only. My question for the 160 degree is sometimes a lot of the parts are all the same so would the v8 one work for my L36?

first off, unless you have an 01 or 02 there's no need to reprogram for a thermostat. might help just for the conveneince of not having a fan switch on previous years, but if you're gonna do the thermo,do the fan switch mod as well.

the V8 thermo won't work with the V6's either.

So your saying i could add the new thermo in and it will work on my car but its not really worth it unless if i do the fan switch mod?

getting that v8 thermostat on your car will involve a lot of duct tape. i was researching the 160 / 180 degree thermostat mod when i first got my car and from what ive read from the threads (using the search button) was that the thermostat only controls when the coolant is released, so it might cool your car a little better, but the fan mod is the way to go if you want to cool your car. cooler engine = better performance ... so the thermostat would be a good start to a cooler engine, but don't expect too much from it. also, the gauges in your dashboard cluster are not very accurate, so don't go by the gauge.

oh yeah ... you can get 180 / 160 thermostats not only from SLP ... but from parts stores like Napa / Autozone / Pep Boys and junk ... just to let you know.

                  Just replaced mine.
I had got the feeling that my old one was stuck open, cos the car never seemed to get hot enough. I mean, the temp needle never even got to the quarter mark.

Swapped it out on Sunday morning, and could see why I was having problems. Old one was Brown - meaning Rusty!
Popped the new one in, and it now seems to be working a hell of a lot better.

I bought my replacement from GM dealer here in the UK, and it appears that it's a 180.
Now from info I got, the standard on mine would have been a 195 or something, which they later changed, so I'm wondering if a 180 is standard replacement item.
